The Toyota Crown Sedan achieved the highest safety rating in 2024 from Japan’s NASVA.

It earned a score of 95%, demonstrating exceptional results in preventive safety.

It was closely followed by the Mazda CX-80 and Honda Civic, both of which received a 94% rating.

Toyota has a strong reputation for safety, and this time it's the Crown Sedan taking center stage in Japan. The vehicle, which isn't offered in North America, received the top rating in 2024 from Japan’s National Agency for Automotive Safety (NASVA).

For those unfamiliar with NASVA, it serves as Japan's equivalent to the U.S. NHTSA and Europe’s Euro NCAP. The agency conducts a series of crash tests intended to replicate real-world accidents at 50 km/h (31 mph). Additionally, NASVA assesses pedestrian safety and the effectiveness of vehicle driver assistance systems (ADAS) both during the day and at night.

The Toyota Crown Sedan achieved an impressive score of 188.39 out of 197 points, translating to a 95% overall rating and a five-star safety classification. It received a commendable 92% for collision safety and an even better 97% for preventive measures. The Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite seems to have performed well, yielding excellent results. Furthermore, the sedan's pedestrian safety also scored high, thanks to its active hood that raises in the event of a collision.

The other models assessed in 2024 included the Mazda CX-80 (94%), Honda Civic (94%), Honda WR-V (90%), Honda Freed (90%), and Suzuki Fronx (84%). Four of the six vehicles received a five-star rating, while the other two achieved four stars.

As expected, the Crown Sedan’s 95% rating is consistent with the performance of the Crown Sport SUV tested in 2023. However, it does not reach the 98% achieved by the Subaru Crosstrek and Impreza twins that passed the tests last year.

The sixteenth generation of the Toyota Crown Sedan was unveiled as a prototype in 2022, with sales beginning in Japan in late 2023. This sedan, which measures 5,030 mm (198 inches) in length, is available with self-charging hybrid and hydrogen FCEV powertrain options.

While consumers in Japan can choose from various Crown models, including the Crossover, Estate, Sport, and Sedan, only the Crossover and Estate (Signia) are currently available in North America.
