Late-model Ford vehicles, including the large F-series trucks, Mustang, and Bronco SUV, are facing potential rearview camera issues.

Ford has announced a recall affecting 1,075,000 cars, trucks, and SUVs because of a malfunction with the rearview camera systems. Reports from owners have indicated that the camera display may freeze, not appear at all, or show delayed images when reversing.

If you own a Ford vehicle, it may be a good idea to engage in some neck yoga in case you need to start looking over your shoulder again. Many drivers have become accustomed to relying on the console screen when backing up, but Ford warns that more than a million of its systems could be unreliable.

The company is recalling 1,075,299 vehicles in the United States due to potential issues with rearview cameras. Some users have reported glitches where the image from the camera displayed on the touchscreen can be delayed, frozen, or absent altogether—situations that are less than ideal when maneuvering a large truck in a crowded parking area.

The recall includes nearly the entire Ford lineup, from the Mustang and Mach-E to the Bronco, Escape, Expedition, and various F-series trucks. Notably, three Lincoln models are also affected. A table at the end of this article provides details on which specific vehicles are involved.

Ford states that the problem lies not with the camera or display hardware, but with the software that transmits the camera’s image to the screen. This software, known as the accessory protocol interface module (APIM), requires an update that can be performed at a dealership or, in some cases, through an over-the-air update.

Reversing cameras have been mandatory for all new cars sold in the U.S. since May 2018, which is why even lightweight sports cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS now come with screens. Automakers like Jaguar and Polestar are even eliminating rear windows, relying instead on camera technology.

However, it seems that almost every few weeks, we are reporting on new recalls due to faulty cameras, and it is likely that there will be many more in the upcoming years.
