Dongfeng Unveils New 700 HP Warrior in China's SUV Battle | Carscoops

The new Warrior M817 features design elements reminiscent of the 1,073 hp M-Hero 917, though its overall appearance is somewhat more subdued.

The latest model measures just over 5 meters in length and will be available in at least two variations. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine paired with two electric motors. Dongfeng is set to reveal the new model at an auto show in China this weekend.

The expanding market for Chinese SUVs and off-road vehicles welcomes a new player in the form of the Warrior M817 from Dongfeng. This plug-in hybrid 4x4 boasts more than 700 hp, putting it ahead of many competitors. There has been no confirmation regarding its availability outside of China, but some reports indicate that both left- and right-hand drive versions may be planned.

Dongfeng first showcased the Warrior M817 at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, but these images represent the first look at the production version. It belongs to the brand’s M-Hero series, which debuted last year with the more flamboyant M-Hero 917.

Displayed in silver for the base model and black for the flagship version, the Warrior M817 shares a striking design with the 917, albeit in a less extravagant form. The base model features an open grille with M-Hero branding, while the flagship version includes a faux gloss-black grille. The design is characterized by sharp lines and angular corners on the bumper, hood, and LED taillights.

The M817 also showcases flared wheel arches and significant ground clearance, though specific measurements are currently unavailable. Both models include side steps and two distinct roof rail designs. The rear features sharp taillights similar to those of the M-Hero 917, with the base model having a spare wheel carrier and the flagship version equipped with a spacious storage box.

According to Car News China, the Warrior M817 measures 5,100 mm (200.7 inches) in length, 1,998 mm (78.6 inches) in width, and has a height of 1,899 mm (74.7 inches) with standard suspension or 1,919 mm (75.7 inches) with the optional air suspension. It comes with a wheelbase of 3,005 mm (118.3 inches) and features approach and departure angles of 30 degrees.

The report states that the hybrid powertrain comprises a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, generating a total of 700 hp. While this is less than the 1,073 hp produced by the all-electric M-Hero 917, even 700 hp is considerable for a vehicle of this type.

The Dongfeng Warrior M817 will have its full unveiling at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Auto Show this weekend.
