What Unusual Step Is DeLorean Asking Buyers To Take? | Carscoops
The American company asserts that the Alpha5 can accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in only 2.99 seconds, thanks to its dual-motor electric vehicle powertrain.
DeLorean intends to produce 4,000 Alpha5 EVs with a reservation system utilizing NFTs.
Prospective buyers must acquire a $2,500 NFT to secure a reservation for their Alpha5.
The final pricing and specifications for the electric sports car are yet to be determined.
The all-electric DeLorean Alpha5 has been in development for a considerable time, and it is now nearing production. However, if you're interested in pre-ordering one, you'll have to navigate some requirements, including purchasing an NFT to secure your spot in line.
It's difficult not to question the rationale behind using NFTs as a means to reserve an electric vehicle, particularly since the company has yet to deliver a single unit or reveal the car in its final production state, but that is the current situation.

It's worth noting that the Alpha5 is produced by the DeLorean Motor Company, which, confusingly, has no ties to the original company that manufactured the DMC-12. The new company actually emerged from a business focused on DeLorean parts and services. Thus, while the name may evoke nostalgic memories of the '80s and time travel, the company itself doesn't possess a background in car manufacturing.
Nevertheless, the company has created a peculiar reservation system for the Alpha5, which will be limited to 4,000 units. DeLorean has set up an online marketplace where customers must pay $2,500 to obtain a ‘Build Slot NFT,’ which will correspond to a random build slot number. However, the process is a bit more complicated than that.
First, you'll need to create a digital Slush Wallet and then buy the NFT using DMC or USDC, two cryptocurrencies based on the Sui blockchain. Once you complete that, you can secure your Alpha5, or if you have a change of heart before the car is constructed, you can attempt to resell the NFT on DeLorean’s platform. At present, only six Build Slot NFTs have been sold, so securing a spot early may be a challenge.
Regarding the actual vehicle, it appears to still be under development. Details about final pricing for the new DeLorean have not yet been revealed, and the specifications remain unfinalized as well. When originally introduced as a prototype three years ago, DeLorean stated that the Alpha5 would be equipped with two electric motors, enabling it to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.99 seconds. The company also promised a driving range of 300 miles (483 km) and a 100 kWh battery pack.
