A minor accident caused the hood of a Dodge Challenger to pop up, obstructing the driver's view, but this was not the reason for his final collision.
A police chase ensued in Texas, as the driver attempted to evade officers while the hood blocked his line of sight. The hood flew open after the driver skidded into a wall while making a turn.
Police discovered four illegal immigrants inside the Dodge and charged the driver with human smuggling.
Experiencing a car hood flipping up while driving must be quite alarming. The view of the road ahead becomes nearly obstructed, and the driver needs to bring the car to a safe stop as quickly as possible. However, there’s little chance for that when involved in a police pursuit, as this Dodge Challenger driver found out.
Video footage from a police cruiser shows the Challenger departing the highway and speeding away to create distance from the officers. The Dodge speeds through several intersections effectively, but things go awry when he attempts a left turn.
Excess speed and insufficient grip lead to the Challenger understeering into a wall. Although the driver manages to back onto the road and continues, his poor driving soon proves to be a significant obstacle as the hood fully raises, nearly blocking his view of the street ahead.
At this point, the driver is likely crouching low in his seat, peering through the narrow gap between the hood and the dashboard. He must see something since he continues the chase, navigating multiple turns in a residential area.
Ultimately, it is not his obstructed vision that causes his downfall, but rather what he fails to notice through the clear passenger side window. A Honda CR-V, which appears to have the right of way, crashes into the side of the Dodge, spinning both vehicles around.
The driver of the Challenger, identified as 31-year-old Humberto M.S., attempts to flee but is quickly apprehended, tasered, and arrested. Officers, who initially pursued the Challenger due to its suspected involvement in a human smuggling ring, found four possibly frightened illegal immigrants inside the vehicle.
