Commissioned by an Italian collector, the unique 8C features two of Zagato's most iconic design characteristics.

Zagato unveiled a bespoke Alfa Romeo 8C with custom bodywork at the Villa d’Este event.

Built on the original 8C chassis, it retains the Ferrari-Maserati V8 engine.

This one-off model, created for a private Italian collector, is sure to be highly sought after.

Italy is renowned for its independent design firms, often sought after by manufacturers wanting to create something unique. Hence, one might think Alfa Romeo would hire one of these firms for the 8C Competizione. However, it was actually designed by Wolfgang Egger and Daniele Gaglione at Alfa’s in-house Centro Stile, and they achieved remarkable results.

Despite this, Atelier Zagato has taken the opportunity to reinterpret this stunning Alfa 15 years after its production ceased. Designed and manufactured entirely in-house by Zagato at the request of an Italian collector, the one-off 8C DoppiaCoda Zagato was showcased during the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

A Fresh Design for a Familiar Foundation

Described as completing “the final missing link to Zagato’s modern interpretations of the most legendary Alfa Romeo models,” this vehicle utilizes the carbon fiber platform of the 8C Competizione but features entirely unique and potentially even more extraordinary bodywork that highlights the design and coachbuilding expertise of Zagato.

Andrea Michele Zagato, the company’s president, stated that although the entire body is different from the original, the rear end—also the source of its name (Doppia Coda means Double End)—is its most distinctive feature, merging the Kamm-tail (or Coda Tronca) with a short, rounded design.

“With the AGTZ Twin Tail project in 2024, we explored a convertible concept between short-tail and long-tail configurations, effectively creating two cars in one,” he explained. “With the 8C DoppiaCoda, we instead fused round and truncated tails into one cohesive body style—while still preserving the functional advantages of both.”

Zagato’s chief designer, Norihiko Harada, pointed out that the Kamm-Tail is typically found on extreme, race-themed sports cars. “Applied directly to an elegant GT like the 8C, the tail would have appeared visually heavy. That’s why we developed this ‘wing tronca’ specifically for this vehicle.”

      V8 Power

Although the Italian design house didn’t disclose specifics about the engine, it is believed to be the same powerful Ferrari-built and Maserati-sourced 'F136' 4.7-liter V8 from the original 8C. This engine powered just 500 coupes and 329 Spiders produced from 2007 to 2010.

In those models, the naturally aspirated V8 delivered 444 hp (450 PS / 331 kW) at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) at 4,750 rpm, all directed to the rear wheels via a six-speed automated transmission, achieving a claimed 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 4.2 seconds.

The one-off vehicle will be delivered to its owner right after the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este concludes. Even a standard 8C Competizione, with its exquisite curves, carbon fiber construction, and naturally aspirated Ferrari-Maserati V8, is a prize in any collection—yet one individual will possess something even more extraordinary to admire.
