Opel and Vauxhall's GSE performance sub-brand is shifting to an all-electric lineup, emphasizing sporty design and enhanced chassis features.
The Mokka GSE is set to launch in 2025, boasting a more athletic aesthetic and an improved chassis configuration.
This compact SUV may adopt a more powerful electric motor sourced from the Abarth 600e.
Opel has revealed that the GSE sub-brand, which focuses on performance models, is moving away from hybrids to entirely electric vehicles, leaving behind its previous plug-in hybrid approach. The Mokka GSE will be the inaugural model for this new direction, anticipated to be unveiled later this year.
Originally established in 2022, the GSE sub-brand from Opel and Vauxhall featured electrified models equipped with plug-in hybrid technology. The Astra hatchback, Astra Sports Tourer estate, and Grandland SUV were among the vehicles receiving GSE versions, all offering sharper handling and enhanced performance. As of this year, however, the GSE name will adopt a new logo and will exclusively denote fully electric models.
What Does GSE Stand For?
Opel states that G represents Grand, German engineering, goosebumps, great grip, and G-forces; S signifies Sport, speed, sweat, and navigating S-curves; and E stands for Electric, excitement, exhilaration, and euphoria, showcasing a blend of German humor and brand identity.
The GSE models will feature a more aggressive appearance and upgraded chassis designed to "directly engage the driver" and provide "thrilling driving enjoyment." The company asserts that these electric performance vehicles will be “stable while braking, cornering, and at high speeds on the Autobahn,” suggesting an emphasis on sharp handling rather than track-focused performance.
Information about the electric powertrains has not yet been disclosed, leaving uncertainties regarding potential enhancements in this area.
A Preview of the Mokka GSE
The Mokka will be the first vehicle to carry the GSE badge, with its market introduction planned for 2025. This small SUV is expected to align with the performance characteristics of the Abarth 600e and Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce, generating as much as 278 horsepower (207 kW / 280 PS) from a single front-axle electric motor.
A teaser image indicates that the Mokka GSE will likely showcase unique decals, updated bumpers, larger alloy wheels, and striking yellow brake calipers. It's worth noting that the current Mokka generation debuted in 2020 and underwent a minor facelift in 2024.
Recent spy shots suggest that the Grandland may also receive the GSE designation, featuring similar style and chassis enhancements.
Opel has initiated an “OMG! GSE” campaign aimed at conveying the exhilaration of experiencing one of their new electric performance models for the first time. CEO Florian Huettl remarked: “The GSE sub-brand represents exceptionally dynamic, thrilling, and emotional Opel models. In 2025, we will take a significant step forward. The new GSE models will be fully electric, showcasing the power, excitement, and inspiration of battery-electric mobility.”
