Tesla Sales Plummet More Than 80% In Sweden And This Is Only The Start | Carscoops
The recent refresh of the Model Y may have contributed to the decline in sales during Q1, but other factors seem to be involved now.
Tesla's sales plummeted by 80.7 percent in Sweden and over 50 percent in France and Denmark.
This marks the fourth consecutive month of declining European sales, raising significant concerns about the market.
The Model Y update did not prevent the downturn for the EV maker in key European markets during April.
The decline in Tesla's sales in Europe persists, appearing to be more than just a temporary setback due to the Model Y transition. For the fourth month running, the company's numbers are falling in several important areas, and the drop is becoming more significant. In April, at least three major countries reported year-over-year decreases exceeding 59 percent, indicating that Tesla may be running out of time to find a solution to this issue.
Recently, Tesla has experienced a steep decline in sales. In France, deliveries dropped 59.4 percent compared to April of the previous year, with only 863 cars sold. Denmark recorded a 67.2 percent decline, with just 180 vehicles sold. However, according to Reuters, Sweden experienced the most dramatic decrease: sales fell 80.7 percent, from 1,052 units last April to just 208 this year.
The overall trend is not encouraging. Tesla’s total sales in Europe dropped 28.2 percent in March, and April is likely to show even worse results once all data is accounted for. In Norway, according to OFV, Tesla’s market share has decreased from 18 percent to just 11 percent compared to the same timeframe last year.
Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers have made headway, capturing 12 percent of Norway’s market. OFV remarked, "Tesla is nowhere near the level we are used to; you can’t pretend otherwise."
This situation seems to be a perfect storm affecting Tesla alone. The company attributed its weak Q1 results to a production shift from the outgoing Model Y to the updated one. However, this explanation does not apply to Europe, which received the refreshed model at the beginning of the year.
Additionally, Tesla is facing competition from rival brands, particularly from Chinese EVs that typically offer lower prices. Furthermore, Elon Musk’s political stances have alienated some customers in the region.
It will be intriguing to see how Tesla addresses this sales decline from an official perspective. The company has publicly stated that the production slowdowns experienced in the first quarter have been resolved, so how will it respond if this downward trend continues?
Will it reassess its public announcements regarding the search for a new CEO? How will it justify a sales decline when its most popular model, the Model Y, is struggling despite its recent update? Only time will reveal the answers.
