We Crammed Six Dogs into a 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz and It Was a Hit with Everyone.

During a week of test driving the 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz, I was met with smiles, thumbs-up gestures, and praises for my taste (which I didn’t fully deserve, but appreciated nonetheless). People genuinely enjoy seeing a Volkswagen bus roll by. However, what really captivated onlookers was when I opened the small rear hatch window, allowing my dog to stick her snout out into the breeze. I had never seen so many people exhibit expressions of pure delight. Bramble, the merle mutt, was equally thrilled with the attention.
We’ve examined VW’s new electric hippiemobile in various ways, and I recommend checking out our initial drive report for driving impressions and an upcoming comprehensive review for further insights. I’ll also be providing an analysis on cargo capacity soon. In this piece, we will focus on the vehicle’s suitability for transporting dogs.
Since the ID Buzz accommodates seven passengers (this test vehicle had a bench in the second row instead of individual captain's chairs), I thought it would be amusing to attempt loading one human alongside six dogs simultaneously. Guess what—it was hilarious!
For this little test run and backyard dog campout, Bramble was accompanied by two of her brothers, her mother, as well as an “aunt” and “cousin” who aren’t actually related by blood. You can probably identify the dogs she shares genes with.
Accessibility for Pups
Hazel (the purebred Golden in the rear) isn’t keeping pace with the rest of the crew.

With wide-opening sliding doors and a medium-height floor, entering the ID Buzz from the side is manageable even for smaller dogs. However, there’s a slight jump needed to clear the sliding door track. The tiniest dogs may require a bit of help, but most can jump right in. Entering through the back hatch demands a bit more agility if the rear cargo shelf is in position; it’s a substantial jump from the ground.
This shelf, along with the small fabric storage boxes underneath, can be removed, but it's quite convenient when left in place and mildly irritating to detach, so you may prefer to keep it as is.
Getting dogs into the third row is a bit more challenging. The middle seat does slide forward significantly, but it isn’t particularly lightweight, making it cumbersome to adjust while holding a leash in the other hand.
Comfort Features
VW still uses the belt-style grab handle (top left). It can also indeed open its right rear door while the charging port is in use (though the clearance is quite tight).

Despite its $70,000 price tag, the ID Buzz feels more like a “commercial shuttle” than a “high-roof limousine.” The seats are firm and upright, lacking side bolstering. Passengers, whether dogs or humans, will be comfortable on shorter to medium-length trips, as long as sharp turns aren’t taken. Given that the vehicle has a range of only about 200 miles, you’ll likely get a break before traveling too far anyway.
The rear window is ideally situated for Bramble, but it is small, making it difficult for dogs that are slightly shorter to reach.
With the windows closed, the rear ventilation works adequately but isn’t particularly remarkable.
Interior Quality
The leather on the seats feels durable and is unlikely to scratch easily. The plastic components are decent, certainly not the flimsiest available, but it's best to keep dog claws away from them when possible.
