Semi-truck accidents and their subsequent clean-up operations are seldom ordinary. Over the past couple of years, we've witnessed damaged trucks spilling everything from supercars and beer to fireworks. Recently, however, crews in Texas responded to a particularly unusual spill: millions of freshly minted dimes.
This incident occurred on Highway 287 in Alvord, a town about an hour northwest of Dallas. Local news source WFAA reports that the driver lost control of the vehicle around 5:30 a.m. on April 30, overcorrected, and rolled over. The trailer flipped along with the truck, resulting in approximately $800,000 worth of dimes scattered across the highway. Fox 4 notes that it remains unclear why the truck was transporting such a large quantity of dimes or where its destination was, but the scene turned into quite a mess.
If you've ever been astonished by how much change accumulates after emptying your car's ashtray, you know that loose coins can add up fast. The truck was loaded with about eight million dimes! Video footage reveals that cleaning up the spill necessitated the use of large vacuum cleaners mounted on trucks and numerous workers equipped with shovels, rakes, and other gardening tools. Some workers even had to carefully collect the dimes one by one by hand and deposit them into one of the vacuum units.
The accident and subsequent clean-up operations led to a closure of Highway 287 for several hours, although crews continued to gather coins into the evening, as reported by local news. Both the truck driver and a passenger sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
