U-Haul delighted many project car enthusiasts and track-day aficionados when it unveiled its new Toy Hauler model last December. While this isn't the brand's first dedicated car trailer—that distinction belongs to the U-Haul Auto Transport—this model is specifically tailored to meet the needs of car lovers. The full specifications for the newly launched trailer have just been revealed, and it stands out as the most capable car carrier ever produced by U-Haul. Additionally, production has officially commenced, with the first 1,000 trailers expected to be available this summer.
The Toy Hauler was primarily created for automotive fans, catering to a variety of vehicles. It can accommodate everything from side-by-sides and old clunkers to purpose-built track cars and even full-sized pickup trucks. In contrast to the older Auto Transport trailer, the new Toy Hauler can support 6,834 pounds—nearly 30% greater than the 5,290-pound capacity of the previous model. Its eight-foot, two-inch width between the side rails allows for the transport of extra-wide pickups, such as the Ford F-150 Raptor, and it features a 16-foot deck length.
However, it’s not just about size and strength. Several smart features indicate that U-Haul considered the needs of all types of enthusiasts. The drive-over fenders maximize the deck’s width, while three slide-out ramps facilitate the loading of even unconventional vehicles like trikes.
The Toy Hauler itself weighs 3,165 pounds and boasts a simple gross vehicle weight rating of 9,999 pounds. Although it’s mainly designed for vehicles, this new trailer is not exclusively for them, as it offers hundreds of easy tie-down points arranged in a grid pattern across the entire deck, enabling users to secure anything, including U-Haul boxes.
U-Haul anticipates that the first 1,000 Toy Haulers will be ready by mid-summer, with some early-production units already available at select locations nationwide. By the end of the year, they aim to produce 5,000, enhancing their availability across the country. In-town rental rates begin at $89.95 per day, compared to the $54.99 daily fee for a standard car trailer. For those towing something valuable, the additional $35 seems well justified.
