Maranello's finest model has just improved. Although it features "only" six cylinders and a hybrid system, the Ferrari 296 GTB has arguably received the most acclaim among Ferrari's offerings since its introduction in 2021. Like many mid-engine Ferraris, there's now a special version that boasts increased power, reduced weight, enhanced aerodynamics, and a four-point racing harness. This model is named the Ferrari 296 Speciale, and oh my, I am eager to experience it.

Consider these standout specifications: 867 horsepower, 556 lb-ft of torque, a redline of 8,500 rpm, a dry curb weight of 3,108 pounds, and a time of just 2.8 seconds for 0-62 mph. Prior to the Speciale, the fastest variant of the road-legal 296 GTB (or GTS for those who prefer a convertible) produced 816 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid engine. For the 296 Speciale, Ferrari incorporated reinforced titanium connecting rods and pistons from the F80 parts inventory, along with a nitrided steel crankshaft and new oil jets for enhanced cooling. This results in an engine that is nearly five pounds lighter, with titanium bolts used for the cylinder heads shaving off an additional four pounds. Consequently, Ferrari can boost the combustion chamber pressure by 7%, improve boost management, and mitigate engine knock through F1-derived knock-control technology.

In total, the 296 Speciale is around 132 pounds lighter than the standard model, thanks not only to the lighter engine but also due to certain carbon fiber body components like the optional carbon bumpers and engine cover. When you combine the decreased curb weight with a 20% gain in aerodynamic downforce—totaling 959 pounds at 155 mph—the Speciale promises enhanced grip.

Additionally, Ferrari borrowed various elements from the F80 for the Speciale's exterior, including exhausts positioned above the rear diffuser. With its mid-roof wing, split rear winglets, and active rear spoiler, the 296 Speciale enhances the aesthetics of an already attractive vehicle. It may very well be Ferrari's most beautiful car currently available. Ferrari even offers customization for customers, allowing them to select liveries numbered 0-99.

Inside, the 296 Speciale largely resembles its counterpart, but features additional Alcantara, four-point racing harnesses, and door cards crafted from single pieces of carbon fiber.

The 296 Speciale continues the legacy of remarkable special edition Prancing Horses, such as the F430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. Only time will tell if it can measure up to those esteemed supercars in the future, but given its solid foundation, shared F80 hypercar components, and impressive specifications, I believe it stands a strong chance.
