Sharp nails were intentionally scattered throughout the streets and driveways of Falmouth, creating significant safety hazards.

Approximately 500 nails were discovered positioned point-up on the public roads and driveways in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Local police managed to gather most of the nails with assistance from residents, although some vehicles experienced damage.

Authorities are currently looking for surveillance footage in an effort to identify the perpetrators, suspecting it may have been a careless prank.

Some days, you just want to commute to work without the fear of a medieval trap beneath your tires. Unfortunately for the residents of Falmouth, Massachusetts, this was too much to hope for earlier this month.

The unusual and hazardous situation began when local police found nearly 500 nails strewn across public streets within a one-mile area. Fortunately, no accidents occurred, but several unfortunate residents did end up with flat tires.

Patrolling officers first discovered the galvanized nails around 2 a.m. on April 18. Adding to the disorder, the nails were deliberately positioned point-up, creating makeshift spike strips on various roads. This placement posed a clear danger to public safety, as a tire blowout at speed could easily result in a serious accident.

      A Disturbing Discovery Spreads

Following a search of the nearby area, officers uncovered even more nails that were intentionally placed on private property, including residential driveways. In an alarming incident, nails were found carefully tucked under the tires of a parked pickup truck. Thankfully, the police were able to retrieve them before any additional damage occurred.

According to a statement from the Falmouth Police Department, officers recovered a total of 478 nails with assistance from the Department of Public Works. Additionally, residents helped by gathering more nails from their driveways and sidewalks using magnets, which truly sounds like a tedious neighborhood treasure hunt.

The story rapidly gained attention and was covered by major news sources such as CBS News. Local resident Deborah Bent, informed about nails on her driveway, expressed her concern: “It’s certainly disturbing. If they rolled forward, it could have punctured the tires for sure. They might have been throwing them out of a window, but some were definitely placed directly in front of people’s tires.”

Not everyone escaped unscathed. Resident Cindy Collings had to visit a repair shop after discovering two nails lodged in one of her car's tires. However, the town was fortunate, as there were no reported accidents or injuries linked to the sabotage, suggesting that most of the nails were retrieved before causing serious damage.

Police are now encouraging residents to review any surveillance footage they may have and to come forward with any information. With no clear motive or specific targets identified, authorities believe the act may have been a reckless prank, possibly by teenagers. They hope that those responsible will be held accountable and recognize the serious dangers their actions have posed to the community.
