Genesis Identifies Potential for a G-Class Competitor Within Its SUV Range | Carscoops

It appears we may indeed witness a production version of the Genesis X Gran Equator concept after all.

Genesis indicates a high-end, rugged SUV inspired by the X Gran Equator concept.

This model could be offered alongside the upcoming flagship Genesis GV90 SUV.

While specifications are still unknown, production viability has been confirmed.

The Genesis X Gran Equator concept generated considerable excitement at the New York Auto Show, and it seems it’s more than just an eye-catching design showcase. Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis' Chief Creative Officer and Chief Brand Officer, suggested that this luxury off-roader could soon compete with prominent names in the industry, such as the Land Rover Defender, Lexus GX, and Mercedes G-Class.

      Is Genesis Overextending with SUVs?

Genesis already has a varied lineup of crossovers and SUVs, including the GV60, GV70, GV80, and the GV80 Coupe. With the soon-to-be-launched production version of the 2024 Neolun concept—set to be called the GV90—some might think they are producing more SUVs than necessary. However, the brand believes there is still space for additional models.

Speaking to Australian media at the New York Auto Show, Donckerwolke alluded to the future of Genesis' expanding SUV range. As reported by CarExpert, he stated:

“The X Gran Equator is a potential new addition to an already sizable lineup. In a couple of years, we will have established a family of SUVs. We revealed last year that another flagship SUV will arrive very soon [GV90]. The challenge now is: how do we position the Gran Equator within this family? How do we avoid overlap or cannibalization among these vehicles? I genuinely think there’s room for it.”

While details about the X Gran Equator’s platform or powertrain remain unclear, its rugged features and distinctive proportions imply that it may possess significant off-road capabilities, differentiating it from the rest of the Genesis offerings.

Certain extreme aspects, like the impressive 24-inch wheels, may be scaled back for production, but the concept gives a clear indication of what to expect. Depending on its powertrain, whether electric, hybrid, or internal combustion, we may see more robust cooling intakes at the front. Features such as the four sunroofs, rotating seats, and split tailgate could also be included in the production version, creating a stylish and functional vehicle.

It is hoped that Genesis designers will keep the analogue-style dials and physical controls in the opulent cabin, as these features provide a refreshing contrast to the prevalence of touchscreens.

Is This Actually Going to Happen?

Donckerwolke confirmed the technical feasibility of the concept: “Essentially, the Gran Equator was crafted by my team in a very short time. Like our other projects, I ensure my engineering team is involved, making sure that all those projects are feasible without significant obstacles that could hinder realization. From a technical standpoint, the platform is effective, and now we need to consider the demand.”

Based on the excitement following the concept’s unveiling, demand seems high. “Everyone has reached out asking, ‘When can I have it?’” Donckerwolke noted. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we view this as a major advancement. It taps into the emotional appeal of SUVs and returns to the off-road capabilities that lend authenticity to these vehicles.”

While Genesis has yet to establish a precise timeline for the Gran Equator's market release, it seems likely that it’s still a few years away. Considering the typical duration to move from concept to production, don’t expect anything before 2027. Hopefully, the stunning X Gran Coupe and X Gran Convertible concepts will also follow the lead of the Neolun and the X Gran Equator in the future.
