Roewe is generally seen as an entry-level brand within the SAIC lineup, but its newest concept showcases a design worthy of luxury status.

SAIC-owned Roewe has unveiled the "Pearl of China" concept in Shanghai, presenting a luxurious electric sedan that incorporates design elements reminiscent of Jaguar and Rolls-Royce.

The vehicle was crafted by designer Josef Kaban, known for his work with Rolls-Royce and Bugatti.

The Shanghai Auto Show is always impressive, but this year, Chinese automakers have surpassed expectations with numerous launches. Among the various concepts and production vehicles, SAIC stood out with remarkable models from AUDI by Audi and MG. However, it was the Roewe brand’s latest concept, aptly named the "Pearl of China," that truly captured our interest, and for good reasons.

The vehicle does not just draw attention due to its name; its appearance closely resembles an upcoming luxury European model, which certainly piques our curiosity.

A Recognizable Touch from a Notable Designer

The Roewe Pearl was designed by Josef Kaban, the Slovak designer who briefly led design at Rolls-Royce in 2019, despite his short tenure of just six months. Before joining SAIC in 2024, Kaban’s experience included positions at Audi, Skoda, Bugatti, BMW, and Volkswagen. Notably, he was also behind the Bugatti Veyron, which is regarded as one of his greatest accomplishments.

There are also elements that remind us of European design influences. For instance, the curvatures on the sides and the suicide doors evoke a Rolls-Royce essence, while the gold highlights on the expansive greenhouse bring to mind Maybach aesthetics. Inside, the four-seat arrangement features ambient lighting, a floating central console, a sizable infotainment screen, and a flower vase positioned between the rear seats.

      Is It Electric? Likely

We currently lack specific technical details, but the absence of air cooling intakes hints that the Pearl may be equipped with a fully electric powertrain. This wouldn’t come as a surprise given current trends; however, until we obtain more information, we can only make guesses.

In addition to the Pearl, SAIC’s Roewe has also alluded to a shadowy SUV that shares a similar design approach. While it remains unconfirmed whether these concepts will be mass-produced, hints suggest that these designs may indicate the future direction Roewe intends to pursue. We can expect to see more of this design philosophy in the coming years, regardless of whether it appears in sedans, SUVs, or something entirely different.

Despite the growing prevalence of luxury sedans and SUVs from Chinese brands, Roewe has typically maintained its position as an entry-level brand within SAIC’s expansive portfolio. However, the "Pearl of China" concept implies that the company may be considering an upward shift in market positioning. After all, with a designer responsible for the Bugatti Veyron and a concept this eye-catching, why not aim for the higher end? Other brands under SAIC's umbrella include Wuling, Baojun, Maxus, IM Motors, Rising Auto, and MG, each catering to different segments of the expansive Chinese market.
