Cybertruck Fails to Sell, Leading Tesla to Redirect Production to Bestsellers | Carscoops
Tesla is reallocating employees from the Cybertruck production line to different sectors within the factory, as per a recent report.
According to internal sources, multiple Cybertruck teams in Texas have seen their workforce slashed by over 50%.
To date, Tesla has delivered fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks, despite having reportedly over a million reservations.
While the Tesla Cybertruck was crafted to capture attention, it is currently drawing a different kind of focus, as reflected in its sales figures. This could be attributed to a price significantly higher than initially promised, a driving range shorter than expected, or a series of vandalism incidents targeting owners. Whatever the reason, Tesla is apparently adjusting its production in response to excess inventory of Cybertrucks and a lack of demand.
Although Elon Musk previously claimed there were over a million reservations for the Cybertruck, sales have amounted to only about 50,000 as of March. This highlights not only a surplus of available vehicles but also a need to decrease production to manage Cybertruck stock.
As reported by Business Insider, Tesla has discreetly reduced its Cybertruck production team by over 50%. The article, which references two employees familiar with the matter, indicates that production targets have been lowered since December 2024. Some workers have been transferred to the Model Y line, where demand continues to be higher. "It feels like they're filtering people out," remarked one employee. "The parking lot keeps getting emptier."
This aligns with recent reports of Tesla utilizing the Cybertruck to promote the new Model Y, as it was seen towing a Model Y and acting as a mobile advertisement. This may suggest that the automaker is beginning to pivot its focus towards more affordable models.
One potential reason for this shift could be the recent introduction of a new base model of the Cybertruck featuring only rear-wheel drive. However, with a starting price of $70,000, it falls short of the originally promised $39,990 price point. Whether this strategy will benefit Tesla remains to be seen.
