McLaren is issuing a recall for a limited number of vehicles with improperly routed brake lines.
When safety systems activate, it’s possible for the incorrect wheel to be braked, leading to potential loss of control.
This issue affects select models from 2020 to 2025, including the Artura, 600LT, 720S, GT, and GTS.
Recalls are common occurrences that affect automakers of all sizes. This is exemplified today as McLaren recalls 29 vehicles due to a braking problem. According to government sources, the anti-lock braking system and electronic stability program may not operate correctly due to brake lines being improperly connected at the control module.
The situation essentially involves the “rear right and rear left brake pipes applying braking force to the opposite wheel.” While it may not seem severe, the government indicated that when a driver nears the limits of traction—something likely in a McLaren—the ABS and ESP systems may engage, leading to the unintended braking of the wrong wheel and potential ‘lock up.’
McLaren became aware of the issue after an incident at a racetrack where the driver “lost control in a corner due to a wheel lock-up in an unusual manner.” Fortunately, the vehicle sustained no damage, and there were no injuries.
This prompted an investigation that revealed the brake lines were misrouted. McLaren then began looking into whether the problem was an isolated incident or indicative of a larger issue.
As part of this investigation, McLaren examined their records for an ESP test that could indicate a fault. While they were able to “definitively rule out the defect on the vast majority of McLaren vehicles,” the company found 80 cars that failed this test, including the one involved in the reported incident.
McLaren believes that the other 79 vehicles that failed the test may have been corrected, but they cannot confirm this due to a lack of “recorded positive retest results.” Therefore, as a precautionary measure, they are recalling 29 vehicles that were imported to the United States.
These vehicles consist of a mix from the 2020-2025 model years, including the Artura, 600LT, 720S, GT, and GTS.
As part of the recall process, dealers will examine the vehicles to verify if the brake lines are positioned correctly. If they are not, necessary adjustments will be made.
