Three years after its initial production began, the Solterra electric crossover—Subaru’s joint effort with Toyota—is receiving an update. Featuring a distinctly grille-less front end, the 2026 Subaru Solterra boasts enhanced range, greater power, and upgraded technology.
This model, along with its bZ4X counterpart, has faced criticism in the past for its limited range. To remedy this, Subaru has increased it by 25%, now reaching 285 miles on a single charge. Additionally, a NACS port has been made standard, providing access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Enhanced battery conditioning and charging speeds of up to 150 kW can now charge the 74.7-kWh battery from 10% to 80% in under 35 minutes.
The vehicle is also more powerful; the new XT trim generates 338 horsepower from its dual electric motors, achieving 0 to 60 mph in under five seconds. The base model has become more robust as well, now producing 233 hp, which is an increase of 18 hp from the previous year. Similar to the all-new and larger Subaru Trailseeker, the Solterra comes equipped with standard symmetrical all-wheel drive from its two electric motors and has a ground clearance of 8.3 inches, the highest in its class, according to Subaru.
With standard X-Mode featuring Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, along with Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control, it can navigate loose terrains with relative ease. Additionally, the suspension and steering have been refined for enhanced handling and improved comfort. A "new" all-wheel-drive system features an upgraded controller that offers greater flexibility in torque distribution and control under challenging conditions.
In terms of design, there are updated front and rear fascias, new wheel options, and fenders that now match the body for select colors. Inside, a new 14-inch touchscreen, taken from Lexus, replaces last year’s Toyota display.
The 2026 Subaru Solterra will be available for purchase later this year and will be showcased at the New York International Auto Show, which starts this weekend.
