Owner Declined $181K for a New Demon 170, Now Sold It for Only $126K | Carscoops
A limited edition Challenger did not sell on Bring a Trailer in December 2023, but has now changed hands this month for $55k less than the highest bid received earlier.
Recently, a Challenger's auction results serve as a cautionary tale for those attempting to resell limited editions. The owner of a Demon 170 previously rejected a $181k offer in 2023 but accepted $126k on the same platform this month.
The Demon 170 is one of 3,300 vehicles equipped with a 1,025 horsepower supercharged V8 engine and drag-ready tires.
Investments in the stock market can fluctuate, as brokers are required to advise, and this fact has been evident this month. Collectible car investments can similarly vary. As demonstrated by the Dodge in question, one might achieve substantial profits by buying and selling at opportune moments, but excessive greed and delaying a sale can diminish those gains.
The Sublime 2023 Demon in focus is a Challenger SRT Demon 170, the pinnacle of the farewell celebration Dodge held for its Charger and Challenger muscle cars. As one of 3,300 units sold in the US, it boasts a remarkable 1,025 horsepower (1,039 PS) version of the formidable Hellcat supercharged V8, along with a chassis optimized for drag racing.
Equipped with road-legal drag tires, it could accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in just 1.66 seconds and complete the standing quarter mile in under nine seconds. Many buyers rushed to acquire these cars, primarily intending to resell them for significant profits.
While some individuals succeeded, the owner of this specific vehicle did not. In December 2023, he put it up for auction on Bring a Trailer, where bidding reached $181,000—slightly below the $200k range that some comparable cars had fetched, but distinctly above the $116,641 listed price.
By April 2025, the same car returned to Bring a Trailer, yet this time the bidding activity was far less intense, and the owner’s expectations were more grounded. The Demon—now showing 15 miles (24 km) instead of 12 miles (19 km) on the odometer—sold for $126,000. This reflects a $55,000 price reduction before considering any loan interest he may have incurred for the original purchase (it’s unclear if he financed it or paid in cash).
This scenario is not uncommon. Recently, bidding on two other Demon 170s settled in the $120,000 range, indicating a noticeable cooling in the collector market compared to the frenzy during the pandemic. Nevertheless, the new owners of this Demon likely secured an excellent deal. What are your thoughts?
