This is Jeff Bezos' $25,000 two-seater electric pickup | Carscoops
A two-door pickup, spotted in Los Angeles without any camouflage, has led to speculation that it might be Slate Auto’s first electric vehicle prototype.
Reportedly, Slate Auto is working on a $25,000 electric pickup, with plans for a late 2026 launch. The Michigan-based startup has not disclosed many details yet but intends to provide more information on April 23.
Update: It didn’t take long for details to emerge. After our initial report on this image, TechCrunch spoke with a “source familiar with Slate Auto’s vehicle design,” who confirmed—on the condition of anonymity—that the truck is “likely one of the concept vehicles the startup has developed to present to potential investors” at their design center located in Long Beach, California. The original article continues below.
A recently surfaced photo of a camouflaged electric pickup truck being unloaded from a flatbed in Los Angeles has generated significant online curiosity. This revelation coincided with news that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is discreetly supporting a Michigan EV startup called Slate Auto, which is reportedly designing a $25,000 electric model in the form of a compact, two-door pickup.
The image, shared on Reddit by user Discostranger09, depicts the pickup being taken off a shipping container right outside their office. The flatbed truck bears the name “Time Towing LLC,” although there seems to be another word hidden at the front of the logo. The original poster didn’t provide additional context, but commenters suggested that the photo was likely taken in Los Angeles.
From what can be seen, the vehicle resembles an older Range Rover mixed with a Jeep Renegade—boxy, upright, and distinctly compact. The lack of a grille at the front indicates it is electric, which is further suggested by the presence of a charging port near the rear corner. A brief image search has not matched it with any currently available models, although this is not conclusive.
Is This Slate Auto’s First Prototype?
Naturally, Reddit users jumped to speculate. The leading theory suggests that this mystery truck is Slate Auto’s first model, possibly captured during testing or transport. Other theories ranged from it being a Rivian prototype to a unique custom build, but no substantial evidence has emerged to support any idea so far.
What We Know About Slate Auto
Slate Auto remains fairly secretive, with little information available beyond a recent TechCrunch article. According to this report, the company was quietly established in 2022 as a spinout from Bezos’ investment in Re:Build Manufacturing. Since then, they have been building their team in Detroit, attracting talent from traditional automakers like Ford, GM, and Stellantis, as well as from struggling EV startups like Fisker and Canoo. Their objective is to create a $25,000, two-door, two-seat electric pickup targeted for a late 2026 release.
While Slate Auto has not verified any details regarding the vehicle, they have stated that further information will be released on April 23. Whether this announcement will involve a formal unveiling or simply more corporate updates remains to be seen.
In the meantime, we will continue to investigate to uncover more about the truck in question. If you recognize it—or if you’re the individual who crafted it in your garage over a long weekend—please reach out to us.
