Volkswagen has unveiled three new concept cars for the Shanghai Auto Show, which will serve as a preview for upcoming production models slated for release starting in 2026. The company plans to roll out over 20 new energy vehicles by 2027.
Excitement is building ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show as Volkswagen prepares to showcase three new concepts that will emphasize its “In China, for China” approach, to be presented through its Chinese joint ventures.
While details are limited, it has been confirmed that two of the models will be crossovers: one an electric vehicle from Volkswagen Anhui, and the other a B-segment SUV with a range-extended powertrain from SAIC Volkswagen. The lineup will also include an electric notchback from FAW-Volkswagen.
The teasers provide little information, but suggest the models will feature slim headlights linked by a light bar. Although this offers sparse details, the company stated that the concepts will reflect their new “China DNA” in both technology and design, as well as a development timeline that has been accelerated by over 30 percent.
Regarding the latter point, Volkswagen confirmed that the concepts are indeed a preview for production models that will begin launching next year.
Volkswagen’s design chief, Andreas Mindt, stated, “We have modified our established European design values—stability, appeal, and the ‘secret sauce’—for the Chinese market. This has resulted in a design philosophy that respects our brand’s heritage while also catering to the desires and expectations of a new generation of customers in China.”
These views were supported by Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, who emphasized, “Our goal is to maintain our position as the leading international automaker in China. We possess all the necessary components for success: shorter development times, strong partnerships, advanced local development, production and infrastructure, as well as the right products and innovations tailored for our Chinese customers.”
