Austria is serious about speeding, and one unfortunate Bugatti driver experienced this reality firsthand.
Reports indicate that authorities have seized a Bugatti Chiron in Austria.
The driver allegedly reached speeds of 76 mph in a 31 mph zone.
The next steps are uncertain, but the vehicle may be auctioned off by the authorities.
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a rapidly accelerating Bugatti Chiron...not something you encounter daily. However, one unfortunate driver discovered that even the fastest hypercars have a nemesis: the Austrian Federal Police.
As reported by Heute, a 38-year-old Austrian was driving on Vienna’s renowned Ringstrasse, a road encircling the historical center of the city, when he reached speeds of 76 mph (123 km/h), which is more than double the speed limit. He encountered a speed trap positioned near the Parliament building soon after.
After being pulled over, the driver reportedly attempted the classic excuse of “It’s not mine, officer,” asserting that the Bugatti belonged to a friend. This defense did not help him, as the police confiscated the car and had it towed away. The driver is said to have lost his license as well.
Although seizing a multimillion-dollar hypercar may seem extreme, the country implemented strict laws last year to combat ‘super speeders,’ targeting those exceeding the speed limit by more than 37 mph (60 km/h).
What will happen next in this case remains unclear, but the Austrian government has shown interest in selling vehicles to sanction offenders and deter speeding. However, if the driver was not the registered owner, this may complicate matters.
Only time will reveal the outcome, but the standard Chiron is equipped with a quad turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine that generates 1,479 hp (1,103 kW / 1,500 PS) and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. This allows the coupe to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.4 seconds and reach 0-248 mph (0-400 km/h) in 32.6 seconds. When new, its price started at approximately $3 million before taxes.
