US Oil & Gas President Will Purchase Tesla If X Followers Reach 61,130 | Carscoops
The US Oil & Gas Association (USOGA) is typically perceived as unwelcoming towards electric vehicles (EVs), yet their president has decided to purchase a Tesla in support of "innovators."
The president of USOGA has pledged to buy a Tesla, contingent on the association garnering 61,130 followers on X, which coincidentally is the vehicle's price.
He highlighted that electricity in his region is produced by combusting gas.
The idea of the U.S. Oil & Gas Association endorsing electric vehicles seems unlikely, yet here we are in 2025, where anything appears possible. Tim Stewart, the president of USOGA, has announced his intention to buy a Tesla—not out of necessity, but to make a statement.
Stewart aims to demonstrate solidarity with "innovators and builders," as indicated in a post on X, which included a picture of a Tesla priced at $61,130. However, he has set a condition: the @US_OGA account must have 61,130 followers before he proceeds with the purchase. He quipped, “Who would have thought we would live to see such times? It’s cats and dogs living together. Mass Hysteria.”
Reports from Fox Business reveal that this isn’t Stewart’s first encounter with an EV. In 2022, he shared that he had purchased a Volkswagen ID.4 and intended to document the experience.
Nonetheless, his support for Tesla is indeed surprising. Given that USOGA actively advocates for oil and gas exploration, the association is regarded as fundamentally opposed to the electric vehicle sector. Yet it appears that the president is willing to bridge the gap and endorse Musk’s company.
The timing is notable, as Tesla has recently been under heightened scrutiny, with instances of vandalism against its vehicles and dealerships, linked to backlash concerning Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Still, Stewart’s action suggests that there may be potential for collaboration, even among industries that have historically been in conflict.
Perhaps there's reasoning behind this unexpected move. Stewart explained, “My local utility relies heavily on natural gas for electric generation. So I figure if we’re burning natural gas to charge my electric vehicle, we’re coming out even in the end.”
The President of USOGA is on the verge of ordering the Tesla—not out of necessity—but to display support for innovators and builders. Who could have foreseen such a scenario? It's indeed a chaotic mix.
