Lucid's Floor Mats Are Mimicking Toyota, Restraining the Pedal | Carscoops
Last month, a U.S. customer reported that the accelerator on their Lucid Air became stuck due to the floor mat.
Lucid is advising owners to take out the mats and will provide a full refund.
The mats are secured only by small nibs on the underside.
Other Lucid floor mats have anchors to keep them attached to the carpet.
If you own a Lucid Air with the optional all-weather floor mats, you may want to prepare for some unexpected information. The company is issuing a recall, as these mats could potentially shift and obstruct the throttle pedal, increasing the chance of an accident.
This situation may remind you of Toyota's well-known floor mat incident from over a decade ago, where poorly secured mats were linked to several cases of unintended acceleration.
Lucid stated that its Model -00 all-weather floor mats are only held in place by small nibs on their underside instead of proper anchors. This design makes them susceptible to sliding forward, which can result in unintended acceleration. This not only puts the occupants at risk but also threatens other drivers on the road.
What Led to This Situation?
Lucid became aware of a possible issue in August of last year when a sales associate driving an Air in Europe suspected the floor mat had moved forward, causing the accelerator to get stuck. The company later identified 13 additional cases of floor mats shifting, although there were no reports of interference with the accelerator.
However, on February 27, 2025, a U.S. customer reported that while accelerating, the throttle pedal did not return to its normal position after being released. Lucid concluded that the possibility of the mat shifting and obstructing the pedal represented an unreasonable safety risk.
Consequently, the company has halted sales of the problematic all-weather floor mats and now only provides mats that include holes for anchoring to the carpet, similar to those found in most vehicles.
Owners of Lucid Air models with the affected mats are being instructed to remove them and will be issued a full refund for their purchase. If you are uncertain whether your mats are the problematic ones or the newer anchor-secured variety, you can take your vehicle to a Lucid facility for a complimentary inspection.
