SpyderWerks has revamped all the body panels, giving this Porsche an appearance reminiscent of an MX-5.

Underneath the new exterior, this vehicle maintains its 928 chassis along with a 5.0-liter V8 engine.

Although it has only 5,714 miles on the odometer, it did not sell at a recent auction.

Believe it or not, this unusual creation is indeed a Porsche 928. It’s hard to accept, considering the unusual bodywork that now embellishes the classic Porsche, but it truly is a 928. Earlier this week, it was offered for sale but failed to secure a new owner, despite the bidding reaching $15,000.

This is a 1987 Porsche 928, which is thought to have been modified in the 1990s by a small business named SpyderWerks. That company has since gone defunct, but is recognized for producing a limited number of convertible 928s like this one. Pinpointing exact figures on how many SpyderWerks vehicles were made is challenging, but it’s evident that these altered 928s are quite uncommon.

The body of this 928 Spyder deviates significantly from anything Porsche manufactured in the 1980s. In fact, it bears more design resemblances to a Mazda MX-5 than to the Porsche 928. The original body panels have been replaced with softer, curvier shapes that align more with the convertible sports car aesthetic of the time.

Take the front, for instance. It features simple round headlights and, similar to the 928, a small grille. New wing mirrors, doors, and door handles have also been added. As a Spyder, the fixed roof has been removed to accommodate a convertible soft top. The bulging rear quarter panels are particularly striking, as are the uniquely tinted taillights.

Despite the numerous modifications made to the exterior, much of the interior remains true to the standard 928. However, adjustments have been made to the dashboard and door panels, along with the installation of a new Momo steering wheel. The original 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 appears entirely intact, and the car has only been driven 5,714 miles (9,195 km), as noted by Mecum.

One likely reason the car didn’t sell is that many potential buyers probably lack awareness of what it is or may not be particularly excited about owning a 928 that looks nothing like a Porsche. Additionally, since this SpyderWerks creation has a restored salvage title, it poses a challenge for sellers.

Despite its unique history, this SpyderWerks Porsche may simply need a little more time—and a buyer with a vivid imagination—to find the right new home.
