This Porsche 911 Outshines Purists by Featuring a 500-HP Honda K24 Engine.
This modified Porsche 911 is truly one-of-a-kind. By merging two key elements of today's automotive culture, it serves as an ideal representative of the current scene. It boasts stunning aesthetics, an impressive sound, and an entertaining backstory. Ben Sipson, the vehicle's owner, driver, and builder, has embarked on numerous exciting car projects, taking this 996 to remarkable heights after witnessing the performance of a K Series engine in a Smart car, no less.
The 996 generation of the Porsche 911 has long been regarded as the least appealing version of this iconic car. This perception has had a significant impact—much like Heath Ledger's Joker states in The Dark Knight regarding his favorite things: “They’re cheap!” Still, "cheap" is a relative term. No usable Porsche 911 can be considered truly inexpensive, but the disdain directed at the 996 has placed it within the accessible range for more enthusiasts and modifiers. Despite its notorious headlight design, it remains a 911, and a well-maintained example still offers an exceptional driving experience. Consequently, many discerning car enthusiasts are now tinkering with them, making the platform a great representation of the present automotive scene.
Regarding the Honda K Series engine, it stands as another key element in car tuning in the 2020s. Its rising popularity parallels that of the 996, primarily due to its favorable performance-to-cost ratio. Honda K engines are dependable, rev high, are well-engineered, and benefit from a vast aftermarket, allowing for significant horsepower upgrades.
Many of Sipson's modifications stemmed from his ingenuity and engineering skills. He even manufactures a limited number of parts for those interested in performing a similar engine swap on their own 911. His custom modifications, along with some aftermarket components and tailored engine management technology, enabled him to achieve much greater power than the factory output.
I’m thoroughly impressed by the quality of the work on display, and I admire the subtle yet extreme appearance of the exhaust exiting directly from the engine cover, reminiscent of a McLaren. The relatively understated look combined with classic wheels lends the car a sophisticated aesthetic that contrasts beautifully with its aggressive sound—always an enjoyable mix.
Although Sipson indicated that the car wasn’t available for sale during our video shoot, I've learned that it has since been sold to another enthusiast. So, to the new owner, your car comes with a cool mini-biography! You’re welcome.
For everyone else, if you liked this video, be sure to explore the rest of the CARISMA collection. Last month, we featured how a decommissioned nuclear fallout van was transformed into an incredible off-road camper. You can find that and more on The Drive’s YouTube channel now.
