The electric crossover is set to challenge the Porsche Macan Electric with a tri-motor powertrain and torque vectoring.
Alpine has shared images of its A390 undergoing testing near the Arctic, with the first interior photo highlighting a steering wheel similar to that of the A290 hot hatch. This competitor to the Porsche Macan Electric is slated for its global reveal on May 27.
Following a Car of the Year win for its A290 hot hatch, Alpine is generating excitement for the next vehicle in its revitalization strategy. The Renault performance division has recently released numerous images of the A390 crossover during winter testing in anticipation of the May 27 debut.
While our own photographers have previously captured disguised A390 prototypes, these official images provide a much clearer view. They afford a close look at the aero bridge at the front, illustrating how air is funneled between the horizontal light bar and the Alpine branding, then expelled across the recessed hood.
Additionally, the images highlight the spine running along the hood and roof, the design of the LED taillights, a small trunk lip spoiler, and provide the first look at the cockpit of the A390. The single interior photo showcases a robust, flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in leather, which closely resembles the one found in the A290, drawing inspiration from Alpine's F1 car.
Among the standard buttons for cruise control, volume, and voice commands, the steering wheel includes three switches for customizing the driving experience. A red button marked 'OV' for 'overtake' on the right spoke, activated by a thumb press, engages the power boost feature (though on the A290, this same response can be achieved by pushing the throttle past the detent).
There’s also a five-setting Drive mode button positioned below the same spoke and, on the opposite side, a rotary dial to adjust regenerative braking. A pair of sporty metal pedals can be seen in the footwell, although the shape of the dashboard and the screens or seats remain unclear.
These images provide our first insight into the A390's torque-vectoring capabilities thanks to its triple-motor configuration, with many shots showcasing the crossover’s oversteering abilities, indicating promising potential against the Porsche Macan Electric.
According to dimensions shared by Alpine, the A390 measures 4,615 mm (181.7 inches) in length, making it slightly shorter, narrower, and lower than the more SUV-like Macan, but Alpine asserts it will accommodate five passengers comfortably.
