Volvo ES90 Electric Sedan Leaked, Promises a 435-Mile Range (Updated) | Carscoops
The ES90 will be complemented by a refreshed version of the ICE-powered S90 sedan.
Volvo's ES90 electric flagship is set to debut on March 5, with the updated ICE S90 arriving afterward.
The ES90 features Volvo’s most advanced computing capabilities, offers the longest range, and allows for the fastest charging times.
Teasers have shown a recognizable silhouette with an aerodynamic roofline and split taillights.
Update 3/3: We may not need to wait until Wednesday for our first look at the new Volvo ES90, as what seems to be an official photo has emerged online. The image corresponds with Volvo’s recent teasers, showcasing a robust and relatively high-profile design, along with the distinctive front seen in Volvo's latest electric vehicles. The original article continues below.
Volvo is preparing for the launch of the all-new fully electric ES90, scheduled for March 5. This software-centric sedan will represent the most powerful Volvo to date in terms of computing capability, promising a driving range exceeding 700 km (435 miles). In addition, the company is also updating the S90 sedan to ensure that an ICE option remains available alongside the new EV.
Following last year's initial teaser, Volvo has released more images of the ES90, revealing an unusual split taillight configuration at the rear. While maintaining a classic three-box sedan shape, the EV includes extra LEDs positioned next to the rear window, enhancing the main taillights in their traditional location.
Previous teasers have highlighted the ES90’s elegant roofline, familiar greenhouse, flush door handles, and a roof-mounted LiDar. The front end is anticipated to resemble that of the EX90, featuring Volvo’s renowned “Thor’s hammer” LED headlights.
Extended Range and Rapid Charging
Volvo has confirmed that the ES90 will come equipped with an 800-volt system, providing it with the longest range and quickest charging capabilities among its electric vehicle lineup.
In addition to offering a projected WLTP range of over 700 km (435 miles), the ES90's battery pack will support 350 kW charging and include new battery management software. Consequently, it can attain 300 km (186 miles) of range with just 10 minutes of charging, while charging from 10% to 80% will be completed in 20 minutes.
Volvo ES90 Official Teasers
Volvo also indicated that the electric motors will be lighter, although they did not disclose information regarding the overall power output.
Regarding sustainability, the ES90 will be constructed using recycled and natural materials. The company will also provide transparency about the sources of the rare metals used in the battery pack and its carbon footprint.
Advanced Technology Under the Hood
The ES90 is built on the SPA2 architecture already in use by the EX90, while the new SPA3 platform is set to launch with the EX60 in 2026. This electric sedan will be the first Volvo to incorporate a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin configuration, which will give it the highest computing power in the brand’s lineup. This setup will also be implemented in the EX90, with current customers receiving an upgrade at no cost.
The system will support AI-driven active safety features and sensors, contributing to Volvo’s “Safe Space Technology.” Sensor hardware in the ES90 will include one LiDar, five radars, eight cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and an "advanced driver understanding system" inside the vehicle.
Similar to the mechanically related SUV, the electric sedan will feature the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack – encompassing hardware, software modules, and systems – that will eventually be applied across the automaker's entire electric vehicle collection. Software updates will allow the ES90 to "continuously evolve and improve over time" in safety, connectivity, and performance.
The Volvo S90 is Undergoing a Facelift
In conjunction with the ES90, Volvo is working on a significantly updated version of the ICE-powered sedan, part of five new products planned for 2025. Leaked images indicate a complete redesign of both the front and rear, giving the traditional model a fresh, contemporary look. First launched in 2016 and updated slightly in 2020, the facelift will extend the S90’s lifecycle as a choice alongside Volvo’s expanding electric lineup.
It is still uncertain whether the V90 estate will also receive this new redesign. Last month, Volvo announced intentions to introduce "meaningful upgrades" for two of its current models in 2025, one being the recently updated XC60.
By prolonging the lifecycle of its older ICE-powered models, Volvo aims to provide alternative choices alongside its growing electric lineup, particularly following its shift away from the goal of becoming an all-EV brand by 2030. This strategy was similarly applied to the recently updated XC90 flagship SUV, which will still be available along with the fully electric EX90.
