On Monday, sports car racing veteran Katherine Legge announced that she will make her NASCAR Cup Series debut this weekend at Phoenix Raceway during the Shriners Children’s 500. She will be the first woman to compete in stock car racing's top series since Danica Patrick in 2018.
Legge has five starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and recently took part in the Dente 200 NASCAR ARCA race at Daytona this year, where her race ended prematurely due to a crash on Lap 3. Before that, her latest stock car race was at Road Atlanta in 2023. Legge is widely recognized for her extensive experience in IMSA endurance racing, along with her recent appearances at the Indy 500 and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. She has also ventured into other racing disciplines, including competing at the Chili Bowl Nationals in 2024.
The popular British driver will pilot the No. 78 Chevrolet for Live Fast Motorsports, which is usually driven by team co-owner BJ McCloud. The Mooresville, North Carolina-based team initially stated it would participate in only seven Cup races in 2025, but Legge's entry into the Phoenix race adds to their original schedule.
With over 20 years of racing experience across multiple series, Legge currently holds two records at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: the fastest single-lap Indy 500 qualifying run by a woman at 231.627 mph, and the fastest four-lap qualifying run by a woman at 230.070 mph.
