Ford is recalling 216,553 Explorer models and 23,947 Lincoln Aviator models due to issues with unsecured seatbelt anchor bolts.

The problem came to light after Transport Canada received a customer complaint.

Repairs are needed for a seatbelt buckle anchor bolt that is not properly secured.

Ford and Lincoln dealerships have been directed to replace any defective seat components.

A seatbelt-related matter has led Ford to recall over 240,000 vehicles in the U.S. This recall affects specific 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator models, with notifications being sent to owners on March 31. What mistake has Ford made this time?

Ford was initially informed of a potential issue in November 2024 by Transport Canada, following a customer complaint regarding a loose or uninstalled second-row center seatbelt anchor bolt in a 2020 Explorer. Ford's Critical Concern Review Group initiated an investigation into the situation.

Earlier this year, Ford concluded that “undocumented seat rework had been performed outside of standard operating procedures,” and it identified four warranty claims linked to loose or missing anchor bolts.

In a recall notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dated February 14, Ford stated that there may be an improperly secured seatbelt buckle anchor bolt in one or more seat positions, as well as a possibly loose seatbelt retractor anchor bolt in the second-row center seat.

In total, 216,563 Explorer models manufactured between October 19, 2018, and July 11, 2020, are involved. The recall also encompasses 23,947 Lincoln Aviators built from October 19, 2018, to July 11, 2020. Ford indicated that owners may notice a squeak or rattle if there is an unsecured anchor bolt.

As noted, owners will be notified about the recall at the end of March. Ford and Lincoln dealerships have been instructed to examine the affected bolts and replace any impacted seat components at no cost. Owners who have previously paid to address this issue will also receive reimbursement.
