Ford Mustang and Ranger Might Receive Motorsport-Themed Special Editions | Carscoops
Racing company Triple Eight is currently engaged in discussions with Ford regarding the possibility of broadening their partnership beyond motorsport activities.
Ford is contemplating a collaboration with the Australian firm Triple Eight for the creation of special editions of its road vehicles. This partnership could lead to enhanced versions of both the Mustang and the Ranger pickup. Triple Eight is designated as the official Ford Homologation team for the Supercars Championship season of 2026.
While the Ford Performance division has previously produced remarkable vehicles, the company remains receptive to future collaborations. Currently under consideration is a partnership with the Australian engineering and racing entity Triple Eight.
Recently, Triple Eight announced its transition from GM to Ford for the Australian Supercars, which means they will be competing with Mustangs in the 2026 Supercars Championship season. Based in Brisbane, the firm has a history with Ford, having raced Falcon sedans from 2003 to 2009 before shifting to Holden.
What is particularly intriguing is that this new collaboration could lead to special editions of road cars like the Mustang and the Ranger tailored for the Australian market. In a conversation with Speedcafe, Ford Australia CEO Andrew Birkic was questioned about a potential partnership with Triple Eight outside of racing:
“They are primarily an engineering company with an excellent racing team, so there’s no reason not to explore this. What form it takes is uncertain, but we certainly have an open mind.”
The Ford Australia chief pointed out that their partnership with Walkinshaw Andretti United is nearing its conclusion, creating an opportunity for Triple Eight to step in: “We’ve worked with Walkinshaw Andretti United on the Finke project, and while they are moving to a different camp, we see possibilities for Triple Eight.”
Triple Eight has already ventured into automotive tuning by providing an aftermarket intake for the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series in collaboration with the local brand Just Autos.
Future endeavors could potentially involve a more powerful version of the Mustang inspired by its racing counterpart or a robust variant of the Ranger, which is among the most popular models in Australia. Ford’s local range also features the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, the Everest SUV, and a couple of vans, but these are not likely to serve as the basis for any special editions from Triple Eight.
Previously, limited edition Ford models developed in partnership with racing teams in Australia have included a Ranger equipped with off-road enhancements from Walkinshaw, upgraded Mustangs and Rangers from Tickford, and an additional sporty Mustang from Dick Johnson and Rob Herrod.
