      In California, a driver lost control of their vehicle, resulting in it flying off an overpass and landing on the highway below.

      The driver was the sole individual injured in the incident, and authorities report that they are in critical but stable condition.

      American highways are already perilous, and the situation is exacerbated when cars fall onto them from above. This was the reality for some drivers in Sacramento, California on Monday, February 17. Amazingly, despite falling several stories, tumbling end over end, and landing upside down, the driver survived and is now stable.

      “It all happened in slow motion. I saw a car plummeting and tree debris crashing down. I had to assess the scene and find the least painful way to get through it. I still had to maneuver through parts of the trees, with no way to avoid that,” said Kyman Jeung, who recorded the incident on dashcam.

      In addition to the sedan involved, trees uprooted by the runaway car also fell onto the highway. Perhaps the most alarming aspect of the event was that a driver in a Honda Civic narrowly avoided disaster. The vehicle that fell from the overpass struck the highway and rolled away just moments before the Civic reached the same location. In fact, the Civic was so close that it brushed against some of the fallen debris.

      “I’m relieved it ended up being better than it potentially could have been. Things could have turned out much worse,” Jeung told KCRA. “That car could have landed on any of us passing by at the time. The two drivers to my left were much closer. I think those are the real lottery winners.”

      Jeung and a driver in a Toyota SUV managed to navigate through the debris, which was the worst of the aftermath. Police have not provided specific details regarding the incident, but they confirmed that the driver is critical yet stable. One eyewitness suggested that speed may have played a role in the crash, but we were unable to verify this report.

      I witnessed this unfold live. The driver was speeding excessively westbound on W el Camino and ran the red light at Acevedo before the crash.
