Prodrive, located in England, has been manufacturing race-winning Subarus and other race cars for many years. Therefore, the enthusiast community took notice when the company announced the continuation of the first-generation Impreza, named the P25. The coupe quickly sold out, even with a starting price around $600,000, and Prodrive has yet to announce any subsequent models. If you’re interested in acquiring one, your best option is to place a bid on this nearly new P25 being auctioned by Bonhams.
Prodrive collaborated with Peter Stevens, the designer of the original Impreza WRC from 1997, to develop the P25. The aim of the project was to create a vehicle that was lighter, more powerful, and more agile than its predecessor, which is no small task for a rally car. Unveiled at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the P25 features carbon-composite body panels, lightweight seating, carbon door panels, and a lithium-ion battery to reduce weight. Stevens implemented several styling changes, including a new front splitter and a trunk-mounted wing resembling those used in WRC.
The P25 listed by Bonhams is the 10th of only 25 units manufactured, making it rarer than most "rare" supercars. It is one of 14 right-hand drive models and the sole unit finished in Solar Silver. The car appears to have had a gentle usage history, with an odometer reading of approximately 200 miles, clear paint protection film, and it appears to be in pristine condition—at least in the visuals provided. Inside, it boasts Alcantara upholstery, extensive carbon fiber accents, and a fully digital instrument cluster. The AP Racing pedals mounted on the floor should give the driver a rally-like feel. For those wanting an authentic rally car experience, the sale includes a factory-installed roll cage.
The P25 is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine that Prodrive has modified to produce 440 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 457 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm. These specifications put the coupe in close competition with the BMW M2, which has a turbocharged straight-six generating 435 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. However, while the M2 weighs in at 3,800 pounds, the P25 is approximately 2,600 pounds.
Prodrive claims a zero-to-60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph, but performance figures do not always reflect the complete experience. Jerry Perez, deputy editor at The Drive, drove a P25 in 2023 and described it as "a barely street-legal race car that’ll scare the living crap out of you."
Instead of simply increasing the power, Prodrive also incorporated a WRC-style launch control system, an Akrapovič racing exhaust system, and an anti-lag system to minimize turbo lag. The flat-four engine transmits power to all four wheels through a six-speed sequential transmission with helical gears, an adjustable electronic center differential, and limited-slip differentials on both ends.
Currently, bidding is at £260,000 (approximately $327,000) with four days remaining in the auction, and the reserve price has not yet been met. Although the reserve is undisclosed, which can hinder bidding, Bonhams estimates that the P25 will sell for between £475,000 and £575,000 (about $598,000 to $724,000), with the successful bidder required to pay a 7% auction premium on the final sale price.
This isn’t an inexpensive vintage Subaru; it’s priced in the Ferrari range. But it’s not just a vintage Subaru, either. Is it worth the cost?
