The brand is under pressure to ensure that the electric Cayman has the essence of a genuine Porsche.
Porsche is working on both single- and dual-motor variants of the Cayman EV. Reports indicate that the company has been struggling to replicate the handling characteristics of the internal combustion engine version. It seems that Porsche will draw significant design elements from the existing Taycan.
While Porsche may have adjusted its strategy to introduce more gasoline-powered models in the near future, it remains committed to electric vehicles. The development of the fully electric 718 series, including the Cayman and Boxster models, is progressing rapidly, much to the dismay of purists who are not pleased to see their beloved mid-engine sports car transition to electric. Nevertheless, if any brand can create an exhilarating electric sports car, it’s Porsche.
In late January, the first close-up prototype of the Cayman EV was spotted, showcasing a design that unmistakably resembles a Porsche yet features many differences from the current Cayman. New renderings give us a compelling glimpse of what the final product might look like.
According to renderings by digital artist Nikita Chuicko (Kelsonik), based on recently sighted prototypes, the front of the Cayman EV may draw inspiration from the 911 and the all-electric Taycan sedan. It presents a grille and air intakes akin to those of the Cayman GT4, paired with headlights that evoke the Taycan. The front end appears slightly shorter than that of the current Cayman, while maintaining well-proportioned aesthetics.
Porsche will also look to its existing lineup for design cues in the rear of the vehicle. The familiar oval-shaped taillights seen in the sports car series have been replaced with simple horizontal LEDs. There have been substantial modifications to the rear bumper and diffuser. If you look closely, you'll spot the charging port positioned centrally on the rear fascia, consistent with the prototype spotted weeks earlier.
Customers should have the option of both single- and dual-motor versions of the Cayman EV. No details have been released regarding performance specifications, but it’s reasonable to expect that it will outpace the current model, although possibly not the flagship GT4 RS.
