Toyota RAV4 Takes Over from Ford F-150 as the Top-Selling Vehicle in America | Carscoops

A new version of the RAV4 will be introduced this year, but the outgoing model saw significant demand in 2024, according to Jato Dynamics.

Toyota’s RAV4 was the top-selling individual vehicle in 2024, as reported by data from Jato Dynamics.

The RAV4's rise to the number one position ended the Ford F-150's forty-year reign at the top.

Despite the impending arrival of a successor, RAV4 sales increased by 9 percent, while F-150 sales fell by 5 percent.

Throughout four decades, Americans could count on the Ford F-150 as their preferred vehicle, regardless of changing presidents and fluctuating gas prices. However, this tradition shifted in 2024 when the Toyota RAV4 dethroned the F-150, according to industry statistics.

In 2023, F-150 sales declined by 5 percent to 460,915, while Toyota RAV4 registrations rose by 9 percent to 475,193. Although the RAV4 has been close to the F-150 for several years, it had never surpassed it until now. The F-Series had previously been declared the best-selling vehicle for the 42nd time in 2023.

Jato Dynamics’ global analyst, Felipe Munoz, suggests that upcoming figures might indicate a different result, but this would pertain to the broader F-series lineup, including the F-150, F-250, and F-350, rather than individual models.

The RAV4's accomplishment is particularly noteworthy given that it achieved this success in its later years. The current RAV4 was introduced in 2018, and an all-new model is anticipated this summer. Prototypes have already been spotted, and a leaked image from a dealer event recently surfaced online, purportedly showing the Chinese version of the forthcoming RAV4, known as the Wildlander.

Returning to Jato’s best-sellers list, the Honda CR-V increased its sales by 11 percent to 402,791, while the fifth-ranked Tesla Model Y fell by 3 percent to 372,613, possibly due to buyers being aware of an upcoming facelift unveiled last month.

The Chevrolet Silverado experienced a slight decline, but the Camry (up 7 percent) and Corolla (up 22 percent) provided Toyota with further reasons to celebrate. The Nissan Rogue, Honda Civic, and GMC Sierra 1500 completed the top ten, notably without any Stellantis products.

Munoz and Jato also reported 2024 sales by brand, again showing Toyota leading with just under 2.04 million registrations (up 6 percent), followed by Ford in second place (1.96 million, up 3 percent), and Chevrolet in third (1.73 million, up 2 percent). However, when comparing automaker group totals, both Toyota and Ford fell behind GM. For comprehensive data, see Munoz’s post below.
