Alpina Has Passed Away. Long Live BMW Alpina | Carscoops
A new chapter unfolds for Alpina under BMW, showcasing a new identity, luxurious personalization, and robust models based on the X7 and 7-Series platforms.
BMW Alpina officially became part of the BMW Group as a distinct brand on January 1.
This brand combines high performance with sophistication and customization.
Upcoming models are intended to embody the essence of both BMW and Rolls-Royce.
BMW completed its acquisition of its long-time partner Alpina in March 2022, marking the end of one phase and the beginning of another. Instead of rapidly implementing changes, BMW respected a five-year agreement initiated in 2020, allowing Alpina to continue operating independently for some time. This arrangement concluded on January 1, 2026, when BMW assumes full oversight and reintroduces Alpina as an independent brand within the group.
The announcement states that the core philosophy of the new BMW Alpina brand revolves around “maximum performance and superior ride comfort, coupled with distinctive driving dynamics.”
Customization will be a key focus, aligning with current trends in the luxury automotive industry. Customers will have access to what BMW describes as “an impressive range of bespoke options,” with vehicles featuring “tailored materials and unique details.”
The company asserts that BMW Alpina vehicles will fulfill “the highest standards for aesthetics, sound, and tactile experience.” This indicates a brand aimed at bridging the luxury and refinement gap between BMW and Rolls-Royce in terms of exclusivity, pricing, and luxury.
A New Identity in the Details
Models will now sport a fresh BMW Alpina wordmark prominently displayed on the rear. This updated graphic draws inspiration from Alpina's asymmetrical emblem from the 1970s and employs a minimalist font, distinguishing it from the lettering used on standard BMW models.
Interestingly, there was no reference to Alpina’s traditional roundel featuring throttle and crankshaft elements. This logo underwent a flatter redesign in mid-2025, although its status appears uncertain now. It might still be retained for select models.
What Lies Ahead for BMW Alpina?
Historically, Alpina provided refined versions of current BMW models, with subtle enhancements to the exterior, interior, chassis, and performance. The last release prior to the transition to BMW Alpina was the limited B8 GT, based on the soon-to-be-retired 8-Series Gran Coupe.
Current information suggests that the next-generation BMW X7, along with its electric variant, the iX7, will feature an Alpina version. The expected power output is rumored to be around 900 horsepower, positioning it as one of the most powerful offerings in BMW's SUV range. And it won’t be alone.
Reports indicate that development is progressing on a high-performance luxury sedan that will continue the legacy of the now-discontinued Alpina B7. This new model is anticipated to be based on the mid-cycle update of the current 7-Series (G70), expected to debut around mid-2026.
Furthermore, there are suggestions that the Alpina variant could carry a distinct codename, G72, indicating significant mechanical and design differences from its base version.
In terms of powertrains, BMW Alpina appears poised to present a combination of traditional combustion engines and entirely electric setups. This is in alignment with BMW’s broader strategy of offering flexibility across various drivetrain formats to adapt to changing regulatory and market demands.
