Automakers have altered their strategies as electric vehicle sales fell short of expectations. Many companies reduced their model offerings and modified their lineups. Stellantis, in particular, made substantial changes and strengthened its position in the market.
The year 2025 marked a period of reevaluation, with many manufacturers drastically altering their approaches. While the emphasis largely shifted towards reallocating resources away from electric vehicles, some companies focused on enhancing their core operations.
In light of these developments, we are curious about which automaker displayed the most improvement in 2025. This question allows for a wide range of answers, but two contenders stand out prominently.
Stellantis emerges as an evident candidate as they move past the Carlos Tavares era. This is particularly noticeable in North America, where Jeep has begun to receive the attention it critically needs.
Once a reliable source of revenue, the off-road brand faced challenges due to a series of clear mistakes. These have been discussed extensively, including a failed attempt to move upmarket and the discontinuation of popular models such as the Cherokee and Renegade. These errors help clarify why U.S. sales fell from 923,291 units in 2019 to 587,725 units in 2024.
Fortunately, significant changes are on the horizon, with Jeep unveiling the redesigned Cherokee and the all-new Recon. While the latter may face challenges in establishing itself, it will be complemented by refreshed versions of the Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer. The brand has also announced plans to manufacture the redesigned Compass in the U.S. after previously favoring Canada.
Additionally, Jeep is introducing a series of special editions. While some may resonate more than others, these releases keep the brand in the spotlight and stimulate conversation.
Jeep is not the only brand experiencing positive changes; Ram is evolving into a proper brand with an expanded selection. In addition to the new mid-size Dakota pickup, a full-size SUV is set to launch in 2028, produced in Michigan and featuring both an internal combustion engine and a range-extended powertrain.
Tentatively named the Ramcharger, this model is expected to take significant design cues from the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
In even more promising news, Ram and its proactive CEO are responding to consumer feedback and implementing significant adjustments. They have reintroduced the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, discontinued their fully electric pickup, and have an array of exciting new products on the way, with the latest set to debut on January 1st.
While Chrysler has not been noteworthy in years, Dodge has finally reintroduced a gas-powered muscle car. It comes with a higher price tag than the previous Challenger, but it offers a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, delivering 420 hp (313 kW / 426 PS) and 550 hp (410 kW / 558 PS).
Nissan is also making strides in the right direction.
Aside from Stellantis, Nissan is implementing essential changes. The company’s difficulties are well-documented, yet they are making difficult choices to ensure their longevity. Though closing factories is never appealing, it's sometimes necessary to align production capacity with actual demand.
More intriguing is the string of significantly improved products being rolled out by the company. This trend has been evident for a few years, highlighted by the redesigned Armada, which is now a serious competitor.
This year, the brand introduced updated versions of the Leaf and Sentra. These new models not only represent a substantial advancement but also show the company's commitment to affordability, a growing concern among consumers.
Infiniti is likewise showing encouraging signs following years of stagnation. The redesigned QX80 has seen a 34.3% increase in sales during the first nine months of the year. Additionally, a refreshed QX60 has been launched, with a new QX65 expected next year.
While more models are in development, the QX50 and QX55 have become obsolete, and the arrival of new designs cannot come soon enough.
