One of the most costly prototypes in the world discovered buried in snow | Carscoops
Bugatti is conducting tests on its multi-million dollar hypercar in preparation for its launch next year.
A Bugatti Tourbillon prototype is currently being tested in winter conditions in Croatia, having been spotted several times partially buried in snow. At one point, it appeared to be stuck, though it might have just been parked.
While Bugatti introduced the Tourbillon in the summer of 2024, deliveries are not expected to start until 2026. Even though that date is approaching, the company is actively testing prototypes to make sure everything is in order for the €3.8 million ($4.5 / £3.3 million) hypercar.
Regrettably, the testing took a challenging turn when Car Spotting Croatia observed a prototype seemingly trapped in snow. Limited details are available, but a black Tourbillon can be seen off the side of the road, surrounded by snow and slush.
More: Bugatti's hybrid setup is lighter than its previous W16 engine.
It seems someone was attempting to dig the vehicle out with a shovel, but it remains unclear whether the car had simply been parked or had gone off the road. However, the parked scenario seems plausible since a second image appears to show the same “VP1” prototype in the same spot.
In that image, the car is depicted as being buried in snow up to about halfway up the wheels. The entire vehicle is also covered in snow, indicating it may have been parked overnight and subsequently covered by snow from a passing plow.
Regardless of the situation, it’s quite unusual to see a multi-million dollar hypercar buried in snow. Nonetheless, prototypes have occasionally found themselves in snowy conditions, similar to an X5 that exited a test track and got stuck.
To recap, the Tourbillon features a naturally aspirated 8.3-liter V16 engine, along with three electric motors and a 25 kWh battery pack. This setup allows the vehicle to achieve a combined output of 1,775 hp (1,324 kW / 1,800 PS) and an electric-only range exceeding 37 miles (60 km). Despite the added components and complexity, the car is lighter than the Chiron.
Update: Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac has shared a new video showing one of the prototypes navigating through heavy snow, though it remains uncertain if it is from the same testing session.
