Forklift Collides with Two Nissan Skyline GT-Rs at Laguna Seca | Carscoops
Owners of Nissan GT-R vehicles are suing Laguna Seca after their parked Skylines were struck by a telehandler during a red-flag situation.
A couple of GT-Rs were rear-ended at a track event held at Laguna Seca, where both vehicles were stationary on the straight due to red flag regulations when a telehandler loaded with tires collided with them from behind.
Recently, two classic Nissan Skyline GT-Rs suffered significant damage during a track day incident at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, prompting the owners to take legal action against the track.
The event occurred earlier this month when both vehicles were reportedly hit by an employee operating a telehandler, which is a large, forklift-like machine used to transport equipment and materials around the track. The entire incident was captured on film.
The red R34 Skyline GT-R and the purple R32 GT-R, owned by Artin Nazaryan and Akihiro Fuchigami, respectively, suffered considerable damage during the collision. According to The Autopian, the two drivers had pulled over to the side of the main straight in line with the red flag displayed on the track.
Dashcam footage from a car in the pit lane shows the sequence of events. While the two Nissans were parked, a telehandler loaded with multiple tires traveled down the same stretch of track, presumably heading towards an earlier incident.
Unfortunately, the driver did not seem to notice the two stationary Nissans ahead and crashed directly into the back of both vehicles.
The impact shattered the rear window of the car in back, destroyed its rear wing, damaged the rear bumper, and wrecked the driver’s side rear quarter panel, taillights, and wheel. Clearly, repairs will be costly, if they are even feasible. The purple R32 GT-R also endured severe damage, including to its rear bumper, taillight, and quarter panel.
Legal Action ensues
As reported by The Drive, the lawsuit from the owners asserts that the telehandler driver “proceeded without maintaining a safe and clear line of sight ahead and without taking adequate steps to ensure the path of travel was unobstructed.” The suit further labels the operation of the vehicle as “grossly negligent.”
In addition to the damage to their Nissans, the lawsuit states that Nazaryan and Fuchigami also suffered injuries. They are seeking compensation for “pain and suffering, emotional distress, mental anguish, inconvenience, and any other non-economic losses to be demonstrated at trial.”
While the circuit has not yet publicly addressed the lawsuit, a representative confirmed that “an incident involving a track support vehicle and a racecar occurred at the facility during a privately held on-track event earlier this month,” adding that the circuit is “continuing to address the situation with diligence and timeliness.”
