Toyota is recalling 55,405 hybrid vehicles in the US over concerns regarding a loose inverter bolt.

The models affected are Camry and Corolla Cross Hybrids from model years 2025 to 2026.

A loose inverter bolt may result in limp mode activation or potentially cause a fire.

Toyota has announced a recall illustrating how even minor components can create significant issues. More than 55,000 hybrid vehicles in the US are being asked to return due to a possible improperly tightened bolt.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue originates from the inverter, which regulates power distribution in Toyota’s hybrid system. If the inverter bolt was not properly torqued during manufacturing, it could result in poor electrical contact at the inverter terminal.

In simpler terms, this situation could lead to warning lights, decreased power, or in severe cases, a sudden loss of drive while driving or even a fire.

The recall encompasses 55,405 units of Toyota’s popular Camry Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid. The majority of the recall, consisting of over 51,600 MY25-26 Camry sedans, along with 3,761 MY26 Corolla Cross SUVs.

      A manufacturing error by Denso

Each vehicle is equipped with an inverter produced at Denso’s facility in Tennessee, although the combustion engines associated with the Camry and Corolla are distinct.

The Camry utilizes a 2.5-liter inline four engine, generating a total system output of 225-232 hp (228-235 PS), depending on whether it’s front-wheel or all-wheel drive, while the Corolla Cross features a 2.0-liter engine delivering 196 hp (199 PS).

Toyota reports that there have been no known accidents or injuries related to this issue, which is positive news, though 34 Toyota Field Technical Reports and 15 warranty claims have been filed.

The downside is that the remedy is still in the finalization phase. Once it is completed, dealers will check the inverter and tighten or replace the bolt as necessary, at no cost to the owners. Notifications will be sent directly to owners when Toyota is prepared to proceed.

This recall serves as a reminder of the complexity of modern vehicles. When everything functions correctly, they are exceptional; but even a minor misalignment can lead to serious problems.
