The launch of the next-generation BMW 3 Series is approaching, and thanks to our spies in Germany, we have new images of the all-electric i3 to compare with the gas model. From what we observe, BMW is dedicated to maintaining a consistent aesthetic across the "3" series, minimizing any noticeable differences.
While some of its earlier electrified models adopted a more futuristic design, BMW has pursued a more restrained approach in its electric sedan styling. The all-electric i4 could easily be mistaken for its internal combustion engine counterpart, and this trend seems set to continue as BMW integrates its Neue Klasse architecture throughout its entire lineup. We’ve observed a similar strategy with the new X3 and iX3, and we’re pleased to report that the new iX3 offers a commendable driving experience as well.
The upper and lower galleries showcase the i3 EV and the standard 3 Series ICE, respectively; the center gallery contains highlights of the i3’s interior and exterior, along with a comparison illustrating the subtle differences between the gasoline and battery-powered versions.

If you compare the two, you may notice that the electric i3 appears to be slightly taller. You’re not imagining it; this observation is accurate. Referring to the comparison image in the gallery below, you’ll note that the rear section of the greenhouse has a different design, standing more upright before tapering at a sharper angle compared to the ICE model. Consequently, the configurations of the rear door and window are entirely distinct.

Even after highlighting these details, the differences remain minor; however, the increased height of the rear roof and the resulting higher shoulder line become more pronounced in three-quarter views, especially from the front. There’s also a notable distinction: the gas cap and the charging port no longer share the same space. This likely allows for a PHEV option (gas and charge ports side-by-side) without necessitating additional platform modifications.

With the charging port situated towards the rear and the angled rear window divider, you’ll be able to identify the i3 electric from afar—provided you remember which model is which.
