Oregon Ducks star Dillon Mitchell is facing multiple charges following a high-speed chase.
According to police, Mitchell was driving at 130 mph and narrowly missed several collisions.
The Blue Bombers acknowledged the event but declined to comment further today.
Mitchell is charged after state troopers ended the pursuit of his Mustang.
It is unusual for someone trying to evade authorities to be a successful professional athlete. However, according to the Arkansas State Police, that was the case with Mitchell.
Footage from the chase reportedly shows the former NFL player and current Canadian Football League member creating a negative offseason narrative for himself.
The 28-year-old is accused of fleeing from various law enforcement agencies while driving a black Ford Mustang down U.S. 63. The trooper’s report indicates that Mitchell bypassed vehicles on the shoulder, used the center lane to pass traffic, and ran a red light while speeding.
The chase extended onto Interstate 555, where Mitchell's Mustang was clocked at over 100 miles per hour.
Near mile marker 47 on 555, Mitchell attempted to pass a vehicle and veer off the highway onto an exit ramp, but his plan went awry.
He lost control of the car, collided with an exit sign, rolled into the grass, and finally pulled over to the shoulder. He exited the vehicle and waited for his arrest while using his phone.
Although there is no audio from the initial encounter, Mitchell seems surprisingly relaxed given the circumstances.
He appears to negotiate with the officer regarding his phone usage before being handcuffed and taken back to the police cruiser. Once inside, he asks the officer, “Will you please tell me why I’m being arrested?”
He now faces several charges, including felony fleeing, first-degree DWI, refusal to take a chemical test, reckless driving, exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 miles per hour, driving without a license, careless and prohibited driving, and ignoring a red light.
Mitchell's team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, issued a statement:
“This morning, we became aware of an incident involving Dillon Mitchell that occurred last week. The Club is collecting further information and will not comment any further at this moment.”
