Mercedes Enlarges Grille on Gas-Powered GLC SUV and Coupe to Compete with EVs | Carscoops
Mercedes is in the process of testing updated versions of its combustion GLCs.
Both the standard SUV and Coupe variants have been seen in Germany.

This autumn at the Munich Auto Show, Mercedes unveiled an all-new GLC compact SUV featuring an entirely electric powertrain for the first time. However, the brand sensibly believes there’s still significant demand for the existing combustion GLC, hence the impending refresh.
BMW has had similar thoughts, redesigning the conventional X3 to maintain its appeal next to the new iX3, which debuted concurrently with the GLC400 featuring EQ Technology. Nonetheless, Mercedes’ updates to the combustion GLC aren’t as extensive as those implemented by BMW on its X3 competitor.
In contrast, while BMW made numerous sheet metal alterations to align the X3 with the iX3’s Neue Klasse aesthetic, Mercedes appears to be limiting its changes to the GLC’s grille, bumpers, and lighting. However, these updates should make it relatively easy to differentiate the new SUV, expected to launch for model year 2027, from its predecessor.
One clear indicator of the refresh is the integration of star-shaped front and rear DRLs, which Mercedes has begun to feature throughout its lineup after their initial appearance on the 2023 E-Class. The new grille might be the most telling aspect.
Observing the aforementioned images, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what’s happening at the front under the camouflage. That said, the new electric GLC has introduced a larger grille adorned with horizontal bars that hark back to Mercedes' design heritage, and it is anticipated that this grille will be used across most upcoming models.
We can likely expect a grille with a more pronounced frame compared to the existing ICE GLC, which has minimal surround, and one that reaches closer to the ground. Clues from the images suggest that while the circular Mercedes emblem is obscured, it seems to be positioned lower than it is on current combustion GLC models.
There’s also a possibility, though not confirmed in these images, that a full-width digital dashboard from the GLC EQ might be introduced.
The ICE and electric SUVs utilize entirely different platforms, with the combustion GLC expected to rely significantly on hybrid technology moving forward, including for its high-performance AMG variants. Fortunately, the GLC63 will eliminate the less favored 671 hp (680 PS) 2.0-liter PHEV engine it currently shares with the C63 sedan, in favor of a more powerful option.
One potential engine could be a hybrid inline-six from the E53, which offers 603 hp (612 PS). Additionally, AMG is reportedly developing a new flat-plane crank V8 that could significantly enhance the GLC’s performance.
