Canadians Remain Unconvinced by the Government's EV Mandate | Carscoops

A recent survey indicates that drivers are opposed to electric vehicle mandates, favoring choice and highlighting a growing disconnect between policy and public sentiment.

Canada's initiative to phase out gas-powered cars is not progressing as anticipated.

According to a new survey from the Canadian International Auto Show, there is significant public resistance to the EV mandate. Many drivers still intend to purchase traditional gas-powered vehicles.

The survey presents a more nuanced view of the country's electric vehicle strategy than policymakers may have anticipated. While the federal government is advocating for a gradual discontinuation of gas vehicles, public opinion has not aligned with this goal.

In a notable finding, 68 percent of participants opposed the initiative, with many indicating their next vehicle will likely be a conventional combustion model.

      Government Response

This may not be the message the government desires to hear, as 47 percent of participants stated their next vehicle would probably be a standard gas model. Meanwhile, 30 percent expressed interest in an eco-friendly hybrid, and 11 percent are considering a plug-in hybrid.

Regarding electric vehicles, they significantly lag behind, with only 10 percent of respondents indicating that their next vehicle would likely be an EV. Additionally, opinions were divided on the reinstatement of EV incentives, with only 54 percent either agreeing or strongly agreeing.

However, the majority of respondents concurred on a critical factor: a more robust public charging network is vital for boosting future EV sales.

      The Importance of Choice

The auto show noted that the results illustrate that “consumer choice, across various powertrains and price ranges, remains a top priority for drivers.” The government seems receptive, as reports indicate that changes are being considered following a review.

While Canadians hold mixed views about electric vehicles, they largely agree on safeguarding the national auto industry amid trade tensions with the U.S. Seventy-seven percent of those surveyed supported the notion that Canada should protect its automotive sector.

This ambition, however, faces challenges, as evident from recent high-profile cancellations, including the Chevrolet BrightDrop electric vans. Additionally, Stellantis has announced plans to produce the Compass in Belvidere, Illinois, instead of Brampton, Ontario.
