[Update: Oct 28, 1:12 PM EDT: It sold!]
Opportunities to purchase a General Motors EV1 do not come around often—these electric car pioneers are extremely rare, and the few that have survived typically remain out of sight. This makes the one available at a random impound auction near Atlanta truly astonishing. Despite being listed with minimal information, it still attracted a winning bid of $104,000.
The auction concluded shortly after 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 28, following an intense last-minute bidding battle that pushed the price beyond $100,000.
Its condition is far from ideal; from what we can observe, it is being sold under court order with a broken windshield, a significant amount of dust, and leaves scattered inside. Additionally, the listing notes that the hood is stuck and a key is missing. I suspect there’s little chance that the old lead-acid batteries are still functional, but I’ve learned that replacement packs are available if you know whom to contact.
The VIN is recorded as 4G5PX2250V0200212. Peak Auto Auctions / A-Tow
I’m unsure how such a rare vehicle, which is not even roadworthy, ended up in impound, but I will look into its background soon. For now, I need to gather my thoughts and accept the reality that someone is willing to spend a six-figure sum on a damaged EV1.
