Toyota Announces When Production of the GR Supra Will Conclude | Carscoops
The final production date for the GR Supra has been announced, signaling the conclusion of an era as speculation rises about a successor in 2027.
Toyota plans to cease Supra production in under six months.
The currently available 2026 Final Edition features updated suspension and brakes.
Rumors suggest that the Supra will make a comeback in 2027 with a 2.0-liter hybrid engine.
While it was anticipated that this would be the final year for the current-generation model—developed alongside the BMW Z4 and first unveiled in January 2019—the automaker has confirmed that the last Toyota Supra will roll off the assembly line in March 2026. This theoretically provides American customers with just six months to order a custom model, although the order period will likely close much sooner.
It was quite clear that 2023 would be the last year for the current model. We recently tested the A90 Final Edition, which has received enhancements to its suspension, steering, and differential for better handling, although power remains unchanged for the US version; Japanese models have been upgraded to 429 hp (435 PS).
The BMW-derived 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine produces 382 hp (387 PS) in the US and powers the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.
Toyota previously offered a 255 hp (258 PS) 2.0-liter four-cylinder A90 Supra—also powered by BMW—, but this option was removed from US configurations at the conclusion of the 2024 model year.
Production of the BMW Z4 will also conclude in 2026, as both vehicles are manufactured at Magna Steyr’s facility in Graz, Austria, and the two manufacturers do not have plans for another sports car collaboration anytime soon.
However, this does not spell the end for the Supra nameplate, which made its debut in 1978 with a premium version of the Celica.
Recent speculations, including from Toyota, suggest a new Supra may arrive in 2027, built on a new platform that will maintain a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout but replace the current BMW engines with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine of Toyota's design, expected to produce around 394 hp (400 PS).
The news of the Supra's end is positive for the Nissan Z, which has significantly outperformed its Toyota competitor in US sales this year. Early October figures indicated that the Z has achieved over 4,800 sales so far in 2025, compared to the Supra's 2,009 units.
