Rivian is Expanding, But Its Service Staff Is Decreasing | Carscoops
Rivian is laying off more than 600 employees as the electric vehicle market slows down and sales weaken.
The majority of the layoffs affect sales and service teams in the US and Canada. The automaker anticipates sales will range from 41,500 to 43,500 vehicles in 2025.
The job cuts account for approximately 4.5 percent of Rivian's workforce and were announced shortly after the company revised its delivery expectations downwards, now predicting fewer sales than in 2023 and 2024.
According to an internal memo from CEO RJ Scaringe, the company is merging several departments into a single marketing organization, with Scaringe taking temporary leadership of the new structure.
“These decisions were not made lightly,” Scaringe stated. “Given the changing operational landscape, we needed to reassess how we scale our go-to-market strategies. This information is difficult to absorb, and we truly appreciate the hard work and contributions of the departing team members.”
These layoffs, initially reported by the Wall Street Journal, follow a previous round in which Rivian cut around 225 jobs, primarily in its sales and service divisions in the US and Canada.
Sales experienced a record of 13,201 units in the third quarter, representing a 32 percent increase compared to the prior quarter. However, this growth was somewhat boosted by customers hastily purchasing vehicles before the expiration of the federal EV tax credit.
Looking ahead, Rivian projects a significant decrease in deliveries for the final quarter, forecasting year-end sales between 41,500 and 43,500 vehicles. This marks a decline from the 50,100 units delivered in 2023 and 51,579 in 2024, indicating a clear downturn as the broader EV market enters a slower growth phase.
The electric vehicle manufacturer plans to commence production of the highly anticipated R2 next year. This new model will be smaller than the current R1T and R1S and is expected to be priced starting around $45,000. Following its release, Rivian is set to introduce the R3, R4, and R5 models.
