We often see unique car collections go up for auction, but Greg Rusk’s collection stands out for a couple of reasons. First, it's absolutely enormous. While Hagerty states there are “1,300 cars,” even Rusk isn’t entirely sure of the exact count. Secondly, the assortment of makes and models is intriguing; while many are certainly respectable, others appear quite random and resemble good finds from Facebook Marketplace rather than a collection of supercars fit for royalty.
Considering the relatively modest nature of many vehicles in Rusk's collection, which Hagerty has labeled “The Generous Collection,” and the fact that all items are being sold with no reserve, you might have a chance to score a bargain if you play your cards right.
In short, Rusk's wealth comes from owning a cardboard company, Rusken Packaging. The term “generous” reflects his readiness to purchase cars he may not have particularly needed or wanted, paying the full asking price to assist the sellers in one way or another.
Hagerty created a comprehensive 40-minute video tour showcasing select cars stored across Rusk’s “six or seven” buildings on his family property in Alabama. The interaction between Mr. Rusk and Hagerty presenter Tom Cotter is quite enjoyable—I initially skimmed through it seeking specific cars but ended up watching nearly the entire thing. You can view it right here if you're interested:
Rusk shared that he began his car collecting journey with Cadillacs, subsequently shifting his focus through various brands and models, accumulating them along the way. He informed Cotter that many vehicles were only used for a weekend or two before being put away.
This seems a bit odd to me, yet it’s also relatable. My collection currently includes a mere seven vehicles, some of which I haven't driven in months. (For clarity, yes, I am working to streamline and prioritize.)
There are several sought-after models among Rusk’s extensive collection, including Porsches, impressive Camaros, and several appealing trucks. However, given the overwhelming scale of the auction and the common nature of many cars, I genuinely believe some buyers will find excellent deals. Broad Arrow is facilitating the auction through Hagerty, which indicates that titles and documentation for the cars will be available after October 29. Many of these vehicles are old enough to avoid title requirements in some states, but it's essential to verify the documentation status if one of these cars piques your interest.
The vast collection is being sold in several phases, with the initial group of 235 cars currently available online. This segment of the auction will conclude on Monday, October 20, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern. I will prepare another post shortly with some of my favorites for you to explore. In the meantime, scroll down and browse through some images to grasp the magnitude of this auction and Rusk's collection as it currently exists. There are a few gems, but largely, it's a wide array of vehicles in various states of disrepair. Nonetheless, it's quite captivating to view. You can access the initial batch of listings for sale and check current prices on Hagerty’s auction page.
