Stellantis’ Chinese brand is set to launch a large flagship SUV priced similarly to a RAV4 | Carscoops
Leapmotor's new electrified SUV is set to launch soon, showcasing luxury design and technology for the price of a family car.
The Leapmotor D19 is the company's new flagship SUV making its global debut on October 16. It will be available with both fully electric and range-extending hybrid powertrains, aiming to compete with premium rivals by offering high-tech features and a stylish appearance.
Recently, the Chinese EV manufacturer, which is partly owned by Stellantis, has been broadening its product range into new categories. Following the launch of the B05/Lafa 5 hatchback last month, the company is now promoting its flagship SUV, the D19, which promises to provide premium amenities and advanced technology at an affordable price.
The official teasers highlight the SUV's full-size silhouette and distinctive lighting, featuring slim daytime running lights (DRLs) at the front and a full-width LED strip at the back. However, images of the model have already appeared on Chinese social media.
Regarding size and dimensions, the D19 aligns with other full-size electric SUVs from China, including the Li Auto L9, Dongfeng Yipai 008, Chery Fulwin T11, GAC Trumpchi S9, Zeekr 9X, Nio Onvo L90, and Geely Galaxy M9.
A notable design feature is the thick chrome trim encircling the side windows, which conceals the D-pillar, creating a look reminiscent of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan mixed with a Mercedes-Maybach GLS. The vehicle also presents split headlights, a clean body surface, and chrome-finished wheels that echo the styling elements of Rolls-Royce and Maybach. With a length of approximately 5.2 meters (204.7 inches), the D19 is similar in size to a BMW X7 or Mercedes GLS.
While the interior details are yet to be revealed, it is anticipated to include an advanced digital cockpit with a dedicated passenger display, as well as premium materials throughout. The D19 is reported to utilize dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chipsets—one for infotainment and the other for the advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Leaked photos indicate the presence of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.
Full technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, but the D19 will be available with both fully electric and range-extender hybrid powertrains. The battery-electric variant is expected to offer a CLTC range of over 630 km (392 miles), while the hybrid version should provide a range exceeding 1,300 km (808 miles) between charges and refueling.
Regarding pricing, Leapmotor has indicated a starting price of between ¥250,000 and ¥300,000, which translates to approximately $35,000 to $42,000. This price is appealing compared to purchasing a car in Western markets today.
For context, this pricing aligns with what one would pay for a hybrid Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V in the U.S., or even a mid-level Toyota Yaris Cross in Germany. The pricing situation becomes even more stark in other European regions.
Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the D19 will not be the most affordable option in its segment; the Geely Galaxy M9 currently starts at ¥173,800 ($24,400) after discounts.
When it is released later this year, the D19 will be positioned above the T03, B01, B10, C01, C10, C11, and C16, marking it as the new flagship in Leapmotor's domestic lineup. Spy images have also suggested that a flagship minivan is in development, which might share a platform with the D19.
On September 25, Leapmotor announced that it had produced its one millionth vehicle, reaffirming its dedication to "fully in-house R&D" and its aim to become a "respected, world-class smart electric vehicle company."
