The device, officially named the "Inflatable Aerodynamic Deflector," utilizes drop-stitch fabric similar to that found in paddleboards or life vests. When not in use, it remains flat in the Cybertruck's bed.
When towing is required, the user can deploy the device, which transforms into a large wedge shape.
According to diagrams from the patent application uncovered by Carbuzz, the inflatable spoiler will extend the line created by the hood and windshield of the truck, continuing several feet before reaching the tailgate.
Essentially, this device is designed to streamline airflow over the truck and any trailer attached to it. The inflatable design is key for weight savings, as added weight can impact vehicle performance. This is particularly important for electric vehicles like the Cybertruck, which faces challenges in finding charging stations and slower charging times.
It's important to mention that Tesla has been working on improving towing range for some time. The company once announced a substantial range-extending battery intended to fit in the bed, which was later canceled despite receiving orders from several customers. Currently, there isn't a reliable alternative for enhancing towing range.
This new inflatable solution could offer a modest way to recover some towing range. Now, Tesla just needs to ensure this idea reaches production, unlike the abandoned range-extending battery.
